i picked Toney but its close.and its only close cause Toney is a lazy ******* and wasted many years of his career.

the longevity difference should be a factor. Benitez' last significant win was when he was like 23,then he got slapped around by hearns, hamsho and others.

I HATE it when people talk about how young a champion is/was. Longevity doesn't mean **** unless you've got the names in this long career (regardless of whether these nams come in bursts or consistently). But guess what? Being young means **** all too. I hate it when Tyson fans talk about him being the youngest heavyweight champ, and the same rationale applies elsewhere - it means NOTHING.

Oh yeah, and before I forget, Benitez was greater.

Nunn was top 3 p4p when toney beat him, duran wasnt even in the p4p rankings. Toney's resume has more volume to it as well.

I also think Toney's wins that you mentioned stand out more so than Benitez's. Michael Nunn was better than than Carlos Palomino and was considered one of p4p elite (undefeated) when Toney ko'ed Nunn. Benitez's win over Duran is great because of the way he handled him with ease but lets not forget that Duran was not in his best form for that fight, he seemed very sloppy not as sharp as he was at his best. So before someone say McCallum wasn't at his best when Toney beat him its safe to say neither was Duran. Although i would rank Benitez's win over Duran over Toney's over McCallum. The Cervantes win is great because of Benitez's being only 17yrs old. However, you have to remember Toney's win over Jirov came 30lbs north of where he first one the middleweight championship at cruiser. Toney's longevity and success at heavyweight as an old man is something that should be marvelled at how skilled, and tough Toney truly was that he could compete with heavies and hold his own every time out.

p.s. Illmatic do u really think Toney shoudl have lost the first peter fight cause fights aren't scored by getting physically moved by a punch as you mentioned. Majority of those shots landed on the shoulder or arms while Toney's tattoed Peter's face, fights are supposed to be scored on clean punching.

Cervantes, Palomino, and Duran are ALL in the HOF, which Nunn and Jirov are surely not getting into,so your logic kinda stinks here, especially since Benitez dominated those guys, while all 3 Toney-McCallum fights were very close (well maybe not the third, but Mike was well past it by then) and against Nunn he was far behind on the cards when he found the monster left hook.
But anyway, although i voted Benitez, this one's basically a toss-up, as demonstrated by the distribution of the votes-which makes for a great debate. Great thread!

nunn is greater than palomino ok buddy, just compare thier resumes, its not much of a contest. Nunn kept fighting world class fighters as champs, besides stracey, palomino never beat anyone else of note.

I scored Peter-Toney I 115-113 Peter. Toney simply wasn't active enough to make up for the disparity in punching power.

Benitez also beat WBC 154 tilist Maurice Hope by brutal knockout for a title in his third division, future titlist Bruce Curry twice in close fights, future titlist Carlos Santos, not too mention he was better defensively.
