Im afraid they did. Several of them. On his appearance, ruthlessness, style, power, ease at taking apart his opponents(my favourite one, he was never impressive). He was gonna be Hevyweight champ. All based around the fight where when he took his top off, his opponent legged it.:rofl

If the question was who deserved their high regard it is without doubt Pav, he still does.

But he had nothing like the expectation or Hype that Lacy had, it was bewildering. Revisionist History taking place here.

    because it did not happened

  4. I predicted Pavlik would get schooled - my name was randomer123 - check it. I said in many discussion threads that Pavlik had no chance.

I can remember the HYPE behind lacy- seriously it was crazy. people were saying he would ko any SMW in history

one guy was a boxer and said he used to fight at 168 and would have never faced lacy. people were comparing him like crazy to tyson

Lacy was held in far higher esteem than Pavilk. Lacy was supposed to be the new Mike Tyson and 32 out of 33 US boxing experts picked him to beat JC.

Without wishing to sound arrogant, anyone who voted Pavilk either has a very short memory or doesn't follow boxing with much interest

In fairness, Lacy being the overwhelming favorite against JC had just as much if not more to do with JC being underrated than Lacy being overrated.

Keep in mind that prior to being shut out by Hopkins, Pavlik was being named by MANY fans and experts as the fighter who would give JC the biggest challenge, with a lot estimating that Pavlik would KO the Brit. And this was the highly rated JC who'd beaten Hopkins, Kessler, and Lacy, not the largely unproven JC who Lacy fought.

The question should be - who was generally among boxing fans held in higher regard before the defeat?

    The answer clearly is Lacy.

However with the question you set up - most people are too embarrased even admitting to themselves that they thought Lacy was the nxt Tyson...

Don't think it was a case of not belonging at the weight, they took Hopkins as a "statement making" fight before getting to Calzaghe, who was their main target at Light heavyweight. It's Hopkins' style that made Pavlik look like he didn't belong there. There were a few people that mentioned it before the fight, no one cared to listen and after the fight the excuses are there as usual.

Pavlik was held in such high regard that he was a p4p rated top ten boxer - Lacy never was.
