Could even be Bruno or Mason.
(I feel Bruno was as good as ever or better still in 1993).

    It was Vitali Klitschko.

Klitschko was a few weeks shy of his 32nd birthday. He was 32-1 and a former WBO champion. And the Lennox Lewis, Kirk Johnson and Corrie Sanders fights -- were arguably Klitschko's three best performances against quality competition.

Klitschko may have looked better in a couple fights later, but the opposition he was facing was much worse.

    Vitali Klitschko is the answer.

That's what it really boils down to.. I give him a lot of credit for coming out and beating a world title holder after being idol for four years and returning at the age of 37.. But the man he beat was 250 lbs and didn't look to be in ideal shape at all. His next several opponents weren't spectacular either - a few past prime cruisers, some green prospects who had beaten no names of note, an ancient Briggs, and needless to say some guys who were in less than stellar shape. Still a good comeback given his age and the time he had taken off but his days of facing stellar opposition were long behind him.

Vitali was definitely prime in 2003.
I'm just not at all sure he's Lewis's best prime opponent.

holyman, tua, mcall and probably Bruno and rahman all above vitali.

They have all peaked at higher levels of acheivements than that of beating 6-round "fat" sam peter.

so those counter punching abilities while moving back and around more are mirages that he developed in the second part of his career?

That doesn't even make sense, vitali fought worse opposition later other than Lewis? I would say it was a steady stream. If anything if he beat better comp when he was not better himself it would show how good he was,i don't know what you are getting at?

Holyfield's prime was 1999 at 37 and after 15-year career

this is true, he was not prime thank you for pointing my error out. mind you evander is MUCH better than vits, who when prime lets not forget, got destoryed by 37 year old lewis, a fighter of holyfields calibre.
