Liston might've been a tad more naturally heavy handed. He did in fact have huge hands and there's plenty of photos and measurements proving it. He also had a very stocky frame with long arms and was slightly taller than Tyson. Looking at their punching mechanics, Liston also seems to be more of a bludgeoning puncher while Tyson more explosive. However, Tyson does have plenty of raw power and early KOs even when he lost some of his hand speed and technique in the 90's and was a pretty stocky and strong guy himself (even Teddy Atlas admits Tyson was an incredible specimen as a teenager). I don't think there's a significant difference in their raw power. If Liston was a 9, Tyson would be no lower than 8.5 for example, maybe equal. Tyson could cause more damage in the long run with his combinations, speed, and accuracy. Heavy handedness is a weird phenomenon. Some people just have it and can leave a stinging/numbing sensation when they hit you even if they're not trying.
Both of the points I cited are facts--they aren't legends. So I'm not sure exactly what "another one of these" means. All I know is I haven't heard of another fighter who knocked out a mouthpiece with teeth wedged in them and broke ribs with gloves 2-3 times the normal size! That's punching power on a unprecedented level!!
Who would you rather be? A very smart Portuguese dog, roughly 31 and a half years old or a very stupid Australian dog, who lives to be 29ish but can't stop making that dumb Australian fitshaced expression but who everyone thinks is so great because of the mainstream media narrative? I think that is really what this thread is about. And I know my answer. My answer is the right answer. Liston can be slightly heavier-handed, but he doesn't have Nintendo's Liston Punch-Out!!, does he? No, he's got some gym stories somebody's great, great gramps talks about. I am done with this thread. It's all a conspiracy against the greater truth.
I had a close friend like that who unfortunately passed Not only did he have so much power in his rt hand you could just feel how heavy his hand was when you shook it. Crazy
Even some girls are built that way. My aunt is heavy handed as hell and whenever she would comb or braid her daughters hair they'd be crying because she'd be generating so much force even without even trying. It's a weird sensation. Sometimes even people who don't lift weights or train are heavy handed.
There are documented incidents of Dempsey producing power that makes what Liston did something with precedent.
Yes!! My old friend had skinny arms No weights and his hands were bigger than mine if I remember correctly. Boney too.
Boxed, you’re much too obsessed with this Nando’s dog. How do you know he was smart - because he lied about his age? Bluey is the TRUE King, as celebrated at the Macy’s Parade. Australian Blue Cattle Dogs are know to have an IQ that is the equivalent to 200 + for a human. Basically, Einsteins on steroids, the lot of them. A huge, inflated facsimile of Sonny Liston at the parade wouldn’t have gone astray either. The kids would’ve loved that...and Sonny loved kids. “The Big, Gentle Bear”. - was one of my favourite Boxer Bed Time Story Books when I was just knee high to a grass hopper. Lol. I have a picture of a great Aunt going back to the turn of the century. Deadset built like the older version of John L. -I reckon she would’ve been able to whack. Back in the day, I understand a lot of husbands handed the punishment of kids duties over to their wives - I can see why. Lol. Women favoured domestic items around the house also - particularly kitchenware - ouch!!
Yeah, we’ve discussed before that power can be best gaged when not targeted at the lower threshold short circuit point of the chin. That way, you’re not punched semi or full unconsciousness - rather, you get to fully appreciate the force - nice, lol. At school we used to muck around with shots to anywhere but the head. Some guys would wind up their punches like there was no tomorrow - but ultimately you didn’t feel too much. Another guy would lazily jab you in the shoulder and, in the most extreme cases, you might feel pins and needles start at the targeted area and then begin to travel down your arm. Unreal. You can def. improve your power but there are certain, god given frames and body mechanics that aren’t eligible for change or improvement - and sometimes the frames and mechanics that do lend to power aren’t always, the more popular “classic” blueprints that we imagine. Say, the upper body of Bob Fitz, broad muscled shoulders, sinewy strong arms - implied that he could punch - and of course Ruby Robert could punch. However, there could someone of a very similar (but not exactly the same) upper body who might not punch so hard. Working as a Smithy obviously enhanced Bob’s build but not everyone would have the “starting” physique that Bob had.
