    You are correct about Dempsey, but i think Louis's era of mass popularity..as an American hero began in earnest with his ko of Max Schmeling in '38 as the standard bearer of good versus evil..against Nazism and American might.

    Dempsey was more popular, Louis was the much better fighter.

    I don't think anyone united people of all races during one fight more than Louis did in '38 against Schmeling. Big event and performance from him one of his best.
