Both seemed to produce similar ppv numbers with Cotto selling slightly more. But Crawford seems to have crossed over to the mainstream which cotto was unable too. Thoughts?

This. It isn’t even close. Crawford’s ring ability is unquestionable, but his drawing power or popularity isn’t that great outside of hardcore boxing fans. Cotto was definitely more popular and more of an attraction.

Iron Mike sums up Crawford very well in this piece. He acknowledges that Crawford could most likely beat anybody ring, but has no drawing power.

Iron Mike has taken the opportunity on the changing world of boxing, having fought in an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr in 2020 and has also announced he will face Jake Paul on July 20 in a lucrative bout.

Tyson was a brilliant self-promoter, but has insisted fighters like Terence Crawford are struggling to monetise their supreme talent and sell out big events.

"Look, Terence Crawford in the box, he’s fighting Errol Spence, he’s the best fighter in the world but he can’t draw 5,000 people.

"You have to be entertaining. You have to be exciting. They could beat anybody in the world, but they can’t draw 5,000 tickets.

"You know, that's because they're not exciting. The way they make their money, because their opponents are very, like famous.

"But there's people, I'm sure they’re a talented guy that could beat anybody, but they look like s***. Like watching grass grow, you know."

Cotto because in his era his divisions were more popular than HW. The only time that happened. And Cotto was usually the 3rd or 4th most popular fighter in those divisions.

Crawford and Spence were WW champs for 5 years before fighting and their fight did 700K buys. Next fight Crawfords back down to 200K. Crawford v Canelo will do numbers because Crawford is an opponent they think has a chance of beating Canelo not because they'd otherwise be watching a Crawford fight. Crawford is as mainstream as anyone whose accomplished the stuff hes accomplished would be.

    Cotto easily

Crawford is only now getting a lot of attention because he is fighting Canelo

    Cotto was a bigger draw

I went to Crawford vs Kavaliauskas at the tickets were very cheap

His popularity has gone up since then especially since the Spence fight but it's more because of his opponents than his own drawing power
