Who was more talented Don Curry, or Howard Davis, neither seemed to fulfill there true potential, well you could argue Curry did but he was just overrated, but who do you think was more talented out of the two.

Both were very talented fighters. Im mainly talking about skillset.

Skill-set... talent... doesnt matter. Curry was leagues above Davis. Curry was the complete package. Davis just had handspeed.

In which case it's Curry by an even larger distance. Davis had great speed, that was about the extent of it. Curry had excellent technical in and out-fighting skills.

Curry was not the complete package. Curry had a leaky defence and laid inside too much at times, he was always!! open for right hands, he backed up in straight lines.

Well from what ive seen Davis had a nice counter uppercut, he had a decent defence of giving you the shoulder and slipping away from punches, he also had a nice double left counter hook.

I think Curry is more talented but i dont think you are giving Davis enough credit for his skillset.

That's crap for starters. The Howard Davis Jr jab was one of the best jabs seen in the last 40 years IMO.

Thats cool. You dont know **** about Boxing if dont know Curry had a leaky defence. Do you know what ive just finished doing ? watching Curry vs Elio Diaz, Favella, Torreance, Baez, Montgomery & Linton and im telling you he had a leaky defence, he was open to right hands, he went back in a straight line

You might want to watch a little closer in future. I post up my cards for you ( (the ******)

It's kinda tough to compare them because of the huge difference in style, even before getting into any talent gap debates.

I think Curry's defensive skill was usually fine in his prime.Even the great boxer-punchers get hit to an extent because they aren't safety first in approach.Curry wasn't a guy like Sal Sanchez, getting jabs pumped into his face semi-regularly and head whipped back by big shots in every fight no matter the opponent. There's a top fighter with a leaky D.

Curry was a long range fighter who stalked his opponent and threw precise/precision punches, he had a good counter left hook and he was very poised in the ring, Curry was also an excellent body puncher and had a nice short uppercut, he was quick but not just with speed but reflexes to. Curry could fight inside but i think that is where he took more punishment and left himself open, he used to bend in with his head and leave himself open to short choppy hooks and rights. He also pulled out straight which is one of the reasons McCallum was able to nail him pulling out, he was open to right hands to.

Curry vs Tony Montgomery USBA Middleweight championship

    Round 1Montgomery

Montgomery landed the cleaner punchers, Cury came alive late but
got hit with the more clean shots imo, he did too much laying inside imo

    Round 2 Curry 10/8
More consistent, more aggresive, went to the body well and dropped
Montgomery with his counter 1 2, great left hooks to the belly from
    Curry

    Round 3 Curry
Closer round where they both landed but Curry closed better and landed the
hard shots, particularly his left to the body, Montgomery as in one of
the previous rounds tried intentionally butt Curry.

    Round 4 Curry 10/6

Huge round for Curry, Montgomery had a point taken for butting Curry,
Curry went on to control the round, he was more aggressive and was
the boss throughout untill he dropped Montgomery with short right
uppercut( great punch) Montgomery got up and Curry went back in and dropped
    him again before the bell

    Round 5 Curry 10/8

Point taken for a butt, Montgomery got DQ'd for going back to butting
Curry after already having a point deducted, he clearly wanted to get DQ'd,
LOL Curry shoots a right hand at him when the fight has finished because of all the butting.

Don Curry laid inside way too much my liking, he seems a different fighter to the early Don Curry
who kept things more at long range, Montgomery actually did land some short choppy punches on
Curry because Curry laid inside too much. Curry's left hook to the body is a great punch. Curry leans in with
    his head when he inside.

    -----------------------------------

    Curry vs Baez

    Round 1 Curry
Terrific display of body punching and he landed 2/3 clean right hands

    Round 2 Curry
Although he laid inside too much for my liking, he stil scored well to
the body and scored a few clean hard right hand counters

    Round 3 Curry
He landed clean effective counters throughout and also hurt Baez at
the end with his infamous counter left hook.

    Round 4 Curry
Not much happened this round, although Curry landed a lovely
    right uppercut, left hook

    Round 5 Curry
Curry on the backfoot picking his shots scoring with nice counter
1 2's and a nice counter left hook, he had gotten away from the body
punchin in the last few rounds

    Round 6 Curry
He laid inside held his feet and nailed Baez with many hard right
hands, Larry Hazard gave Baez a standing counter then waved it off

Another terrific performance by Curry where he showed early how adept
he was at going to the body, he countered beautifully well from the outside
    with 1 2 combinations

    ----------------------------------------------------

    Curry vs Torrance.

    Round 1 Curry
Not much happened they went jab for jab but Curry also landed a lead
right and went to the body twice.

    Round 2 Curry
Curry told to go to the body and he did, he got more aggressive and dominated
    the round

    Round 3 Curry
Curry started to walk him down and bully him, Curry landed his
famed counter left hook as always, he mixed in uppercuts very nicely
and scored hard jab to the belly amongst other shots.

    Round 4 Curry
Curry started out peppering Jake Torrance against the ropes with a good
quick combo, strange stoppage but the refs thinking seemed to be that
Torrance was not showing enough and Curry was clearly going to win.

Excellent performance by Curry, he methodically broke Torrence down

    Official ruling was a DQ

    ------------------------------

    Curry vs Elio Diaz

    Round 1 Curry 10/8
Scored a KD in the first few seconds

    Round 2 Diaz
I thought he peppered Curry with annoying combinations and
    Curry did too much waiting.

    Round 3 Curry
Curry got the jab going and landed some nice left hooks, plus a couple
    of right hands.

    Round 4 Curry
Curry landed some nice clean right hand & left hooks in this round

    Round 5 Curry
    He dropped Diaz early

    Round 6 Curry
Scored a early left hook, up jab and went to the body with the left hook
and scored a right hand late in the round, Curry was little inactive but he still
landed the better punches where as Diaz was active but not landing very
    effetively imo.

    Round 7 Curry

I felt Diaz was winning this round by outworking Curry but he got
caught late in the round and dropped again

Diaz landed a lot of short those short cuffing punches on Curry but nothing
really significant, Curry landed the better shots but did a lot of stalking

    ---------------------------------------

    Curry vs Linton, Curry 35

    Round 1 Linton 10/8
Linton landed right hooks on to the body and head of Curry, he scored
a controversial KD with a body shot, he laned a couple of straight lefts

    Round 2 Linton
Linton nailed Curry with right hooks and straight left hands, Curry's
balance looks terrible, sign of a shot fighter imo. Linton staggered Curry to

    Round 3 Linton
right hooks straight left landing all day long for Linton, Curry walked
into a big punch and was badly hurt, Curry could of been stopped he was
    under so much fire

    Round 4 Linton
better round for Curry but he still got nailed with the straight left, he did
better though because he stayed close inside and landed some decent shots
however he still caught the cleaner shots for me.

    Round 5 Linton
Better round for Curry he put lots of pressure but he was getting
nailed with clean shots, particularly toward the end, he may have took
this round but i felt Linton was much more effective landing clean!

    Round 6 Linton
Linton hammered Curry when he got some seperation. Curry tried to do what
had been marginally successful for him which was stay close but he
got nailed when Linton got some space.

    Round 7
Richard Steele waved it off, strange decions because he took more punishment
in earlier round, I guess Steele though he was only going to lose anyway

Curry's balance and reflexes looked terrible, he only had a degree of success when he stayed in tight
but he was nailed time and again with the straight left and right hooks. The fight could of been stopped in
    round 3

Perfect example of Curry pulling out straight.

You know, i've always thought this too but Sanchez seems to escape criticism (defense) both on this forum and from the experts of his time.

He wqs calssed as the consumate counterpuncher but a lot of the time he countered punches that landed.

Mind you he was what i term an aggressive counterpuncher, one who walks toward his foe to initiate punches vs sitting back and waiting for them.

You bring up an excellent, and possibly controversial point.

As for talent, by the time their pro careers were over Curry probably outstrips Davis, but in the amateurs nobody on earth was considered to have the talent Davis did, including SRL, Spinks and the like.

Incredibly i think he is the only Olympian of his year not to have won a world title.

Davis was a potential great but bad management and a few missing intangibles in the pro ranks saw him fall short.
