Who was more talented Don Curry, or Howard Davis

At 130 Arguello probably hit harder than Lopez and definitly harder than Gomez at 126,but It is still hard for me to picture Sanchez being kod by anyone near his weight including Arguello. I never ever saw Sanchez close to being hurt and he swallowed some bombs by both Lopez and Gomez 2 of the greatest punchers in the history of the SPort.

 

I have alot of Curry's early bouts and he was very hard to hit.Check out his bouts before he won his first title and you will see a great defense.

The problem with Curry latter was he fell in love with his power.He widened his stance and moved less.Any bout after Honeyghan is not prime Curry.To be honest Curry started trading maybe 2 fights before Mccroy.

Howard Davis is not even close to being in the same league with Curry.
Curry was a an undisputed champion and rated in the pound for pound while Davis wasn't.

 

Good post Cobra i was trying to tell gooners the same thing. Curry was actually ranked PFP by many back when Hagler was the PFP king. At the time I would get into debates with my dad on this he had Curry I had Hagler. At the time RIng and Ko magazine had him#2 behind Hagler. Davis was one of the top lightweight contenders for a while but never came close to any pfp list.Although at the beginning of his career he was suppose to be every bit as good as SRL

 

Both had great talent, but Curry went farther as a fighter............ Davis' lack of power and glass-jaw screwed him bad as a pro.......

I like Howard Davis and have alot of his bouts but I think people fell in love with his flashy style more then his skills.I mean in the ametuers he was like a mini Ali and when he turned pro people were excited.People forget that Aaron Pryor was supposedly robbed in the Olympic Trials vs Howard Davis.

 

Pryor's skills sucked compared to Davis' flash and speed, but Pryor was too strong and aggressive as a pro at 135 to 140 pounds for a pure boxer like Davis in a pro fight....... Pryor would've killed Davis in about 8 rds back in 1980 / '81...... Cheers...............

Note: Pryor boxing side-to-side and jabbing Allie Arguello in Florida back in 1982 was the use of a very basic form......... Pryor was praised at the time, but his form and technique applied there in that fight was simple......... Pryor had lotsa' flaws in his style.... Poor defense and he often lunged in wide open for counters.........

Pryor was a sparring partner of Davis and could box when he wanted to.

 

Pryor was able to box---to a certain degree......... His technique was NOT masterful........

Davis actually beat him twice in those trials didn't he? He beat Hearns too. Regardless Davis went on to win Gold and was named the boxer of the Olympics.

 

The hell was Davis thinking when he choked against Jim Watt at 135 in 1980???? Watt was rugged, but nowhere near the talent of Davis was as a boxer..... Davis just seem to lose focus and site after 7 or 8 pro rds of boxing....... Davis never truly developed as a solid pro........

Davis would've been champ in 1984 against Ed Rosario if Davis could've taken a better punch and maintained his lousy balance...... I was pissed at Davis for losing that fight.....

The blow-out to Buddy McGirt at 140 pounds was embarrassing...... Davis needed a disguise to get out of town..........

At the pro level, Donald probably had a better skillset, but as an amateur, I'm going with Howard.Howard may have been the fastest fighter in the sport his first few years as a professional.

 

Sanchez got rocked quite a few times. Check out his early fight with Rosalio Bodillo for a good example. Even Gomez managed to rock him in the early rounds of their bout. He had a great chin and excellent recooperative abilities, but he could be hurt.

 

Maybe I exaggerated a little when i said inever saw him "close to being Hurt" I do remember Gomez stunning Sanchez in the 4th round of their fight. Got to check out that Baudillo one. I do remember him walking thru flush punches from Lopez and Nelson too.

 

He said in an interview that after his fifth pro fight, he didn't really want to be a fighter anymore.Still, he probably could have gotten the title against the right fighter.
