Just at what point was Toney starting to get to him more? I missed that, I had a hard time giving Toney one round, and somehow he was gonna knock Roy out if it was a longer fight??? If anything Toney would have got knocked out in 3 more rounds.
it was pretty much a shut out...toney was so damn weight drained, by the 14th he would've left the ring for burger king
The PPV fight between Toney and Jones sucked ass................. Excuse or not, Toney was a limp dick at 168 pounds in Nov. of '94..... Toney's conditioning there was pathetic.... That was not a good effort by Toney nor can you judge him based on that lousy effort, either.... Toney was his own worst enemy, yet he still proved his greatness..... Nuff said........ MR.BILL
Some guys here just don't understand the term 'talent'. This isn't about who's the greater fighter either, this is only about talent. A guy like Emmanuel Augustus is arguably just as talented as Floyd Mayweather. RJJ was far more athletic then Toney. Roy was one of the most athletic fighters ever. He was extremely fast and had had great reflexes. And of course he had a ton of talent too. But he wasn't a born boxer, he had to learn it all, and he boxed since he was a kid, had hundreds of amateur fights, should've become gold medallist at the olympics, you know the deal. I guess if Roys father had put his son into another sport, he would have become an ATG there too (and he did very well in other sports indeed). Roy always had to rely on his freakish speed and reflexes, and that's why he always was so fanatic about keeping in shape - he was dependent on his great athleticism. We saw what happened to Roy when he wasn't properly prepared in the first Tarver fight. And once his speed and reflexes waned it was seen that his skills weren't all that great - he was/is still a good boxer, but not a great one anymore. Toney is more naturally gifted. He was born to be a boxer. Although he was athletic at 160lbs, he never came close to Roy in that department. Toney started his career as a football player, he didn't box until his late teens. The first thing his trainer Bill Miller did was showing him old fights with Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott, and Toney copied their styles. I'm not saying that Toney was a great boxer right from the start - of course he had to learn the basics and get some amateur fights, but I mean he learned so very fast because it was all natural to him. He already had boxing in him, waiting to emerge. He was at home in the ring. And that's why he feels so comfortable and stays so relaxed in his fights. Tragically, supremely talented fighters like Toney tend to have no self-discipline and neglect their athleticism, which Toney did often enough, to the point of it being so bad that his talents didn't suffice anymore to win fights. Toney is the most naturally talented fighter (from MW upwards) that we've seen during the last 20 years. One question: do you think Roy could handle himself in the ring against HWs while being 50lbs overweight, with all his speed and athleticism gone? Toney can, based on his natural talent.
Please know the difference between talent and skill. Talent is God-given. RJJ is by far more talented. The handspeed, the reflexes, you don't learn those things.. that is natural talent and there is no way in hell anyone can argue Toney is more naturally talented than RJJ. If you wanna argue Toney is more skilled, fine. Toney is a student of the game, the defense, the timing, the counter-punching, the technical prowess.. those are more skills than natural talent. You get better at those things as you practice them. RJJ is quite possibly the most naturally talented boxer EVER. Yes I am going that far.
Roy Jones Jr. is one of the most talented boxers who ever lived. Not the most courageous, but talented he was.
