FItzsimmons had a general lack of ability to set traps. That's pretty fundamental. I feel that excludes him from the greats list, honestly. Among other things. Baldness, underwear, etc.
In many ways, a boxer is defined as much by who he loses to as who he beats. Ali lost to Frazier and Norton. He beat Liston and Foreman. Those facts help define him. Calzaghe never lost a pro bout, although some of his wins were controversial. If it's true that a fighter can only beat the man in front of him, what more do you want from Calzaghe? He beat every opponent, and defended his world titles numerous times. That's very rare, even for great boxers.
He definitely had something Pug. He hung tough in the hardest era, beat one of greatest of that time. Nearly beat Norton to.
Don’t do it again or you’ll really get something from me after 30 minutes of clinching, rolling, slipping and running.
Yeah Ferg, some think he beat Norton also but I think Kenny nicked the points - wisely targeting Young’s body more than his far more elusive head. Close fight all the same.
Uncle Jim always said his power was underrated - I believe him, he once put all of Madison Square garden to sleep in one nights work
I don't think either Young or Norton were great fighters, but each must have their own definition of the word.
For Norton even if he got the nod against Ali which many people believe, his devastating losses to big punchers is what really hurts him the most. Still think he is a great fighter but just out of ATG range.
Ali was also a shadow of his former self by the third fight, so it really wouldn't have been a terribly great win anyway.
I think they both had moments where they showed how good they were, Norton V Ali, Holmes and Jimmy Against Foreman, but never quite good enough to beat the best of their day.
