From 1991 Tyson was not at his prime anymore. No drive at all and when he was released from jail in 1995...i am sorry but it was not the Tyson of the 80s
Tyson may have been in his physical prime. He was still young but he was not the same fighter. His training habits were not the same nor did he approach boxing the same way he did in the late 80's. I would say Tyson was no longer in his prime because really the first Bruno fight (two fights before Douglas), was the start of a clear decline in his skills and overall performances. He was still winning but it wasnt as dominating and Tyson was getting hit a lot more in fights and looked pretty sloppy. Against a comparable good boxer to Douglas like Tony Tucker Tyson was still dominating and elusive. I think had Tucker fought Tyson around the time that Douglas did he would have had a lot more success connecting on Tyson. Remember Douglas lost to Tucker and Tucker was considered a better fighter than Douglas who was pretty inconsistent in his career losing to the likes of Jesse Ferguson and Mike White! Tucker was undefeated with comparable competition coming into his fight with Tyson. Douglas seems to be a bit overated for one fight. He was a good fighter but I dont believe he was a great fighter for one fight only he had a different opponent in front of him to the one who dominated through the mid to late 80s.
I don't rate Douglas as a great heavyweight by any means. However, for one night he produced an ATG performance, to stop the undisputed champion who was 37-0. Tyson looked sluggish and sloppy as hell in that fight by his standards, but at the same time Douglas was snappy, his jab was beautifully timed and he was dropping right hands in there and landing almost at will. Remember, the Tyson that showed up that night would have beaten the vast majority of heavyweights in history. Mike was 23, and in his physical prime, if he overlooked this opponent then it's his fault, but it's not like he'd just come back after a 4 year prison lay off. Mike was coming forward and putting pressure on the whole fight, Buster picked him off like a sniper and took him out with one of the best uppercuts I've ever seen!
I agree with what your saying but where I disagree is that the Tyson that showed up would have beaten the vast majority of heavyweights in history. In fact I think that Tyson would lose to a few of the guys he had beaten previously.
Tucker didnt trouble Tyson. Tyson beat him easily by UD. Ruddock did trouble Tyson because Tyson was no longer a defensive fighter and Ruddock counterpunched as Tyson came forward with no defense.
I'm not adamant about this but Mike's aura wasn't the same against Bonecrusher. Speed and power was though. tyson vs james smith part 1 Interesting final seconds.
i go for Tucker. Spinks had two damaged legs and lost all footmovement he used against Holmes. Tucker got almost outboxed earlier against Douglas but managed to k.o Douglas.
Yes, it was interesting because Tyson got tired of chasing him for 12 rounds and Bonecrusher finall threw a punch If hed done that earlier, he would have gone to sleep much earlier.
