I know both fighters were essentially hometown hero's but who was to blame for the fight not happening? obviously the fact Ottke getting gifts while at home would have made him reluctant to leave and with Calzaghe having a certain fish eyed leech as a promoter wouldn't have helped either. But the blame has to fall down somewhere in many ways it's similar to the Jones Michalczewski situation where the best two fighters of the division never faced off.

Everybody knew who the best was, no need to give promotors in germany a chance to rob Calzaghe.

Ottke at least had a real title
Joe had a WBOgus title that he was content on "defending" against that murders row of defenses he had his first 4 or 5 years
so its the WBO's fault for making this **** title and keeping fights like this from happening

Our lucky stars? Why you ask? You think someone deserves an award for preventing this?

Not really, maybe now people can look back and say Calzaghe was the best but at the time it seemed like two guys fighting in their backyards with unbeaten records.

Tis true. His titles were more credible, but it always seemed to me that Ottke avoided Calzaghe.

Also true. It's a shame this fight never happened.

Cal called out Ottke on several occasions, dont remember Ottke calling out anyone threatening who would clearly outwork him.

But watching Ottke fight it was obvious he was behind Calzaghe and several top ten SMs in every facet.

easy answer: both were fighting mostly bums in their home countries and they were making millions of money. so why risk losing the title when u make a lot of money while fighting at home with paid judges.
there was once talk about Hopkins vs Ottke in a german newspaper, but the fight didnt happen for the same reason.

Bflop is the real bandit is this - in 61 fights he left North America only once and lost.

Calzaghe has fought as champion more times abroad than RJJ, Toney, Tarver and Bflop combined did as champions.....

TV stations: they knew no boxing fans would accept two of the worst slappers in boxing history in the same ring.

    Oh look fiction getting passed as fact, time to refute with facts;

Calzaghe fought abroad twice (his last two fights) while spending the first 44 fights of his career fighting in the UK.

Hopkins fought outside of the US on 4 occasions and twice outside of North America.

Is Denmark and Germany part of Wales?

Sorry, I forgot Bflop went to France to fight the great Colombian Miranda 8-18-1
