I would agree that Ali qualifies as "super strong", he was an enormously strong man for that poundage.
Big George had extraordinary brute strength . He was only 220+ in his prime... Yet I have no doubt he can still overpower a man who has 40 pounds on him . Foreman was no average man , Neither was Liston . Yes Sonny Liston was the only man that Foreman could never overpower . Foreman said Liston would dismiss his power by shaking his head saying "No , son " and would back him up . Foreman speaking facts on his twitter to some dude . George ForemanVerified account @GeorgeForeman 5 Oct 2015 @MikeRobinson66 Sonny Liston was the only man I couldn't control he didn't run, hide or cover up. I had to box everyday, big hands .
In Ali-Frazier II when Ali was focuses on clinching he had zero trouble with Frazier's strength. Felt Frazier was pretty neutralized. Didn't have the power to put him down like Foreman did though.
Ali was exceptionally strong .. it is often overlooked .. if you forget just check out round one against Bonavena when Ali throws him around like a rag doll .. that being said Foreman was one of the strongest fighters that ever lived .. I favor George.
I think Foreman's lack of stamina in Zaire is massively underestimated. He threw massive shots for 8 rounds in that heat, Lennox Lewis had much worse stamina and would have been blown out earlier than that.
Foreman was freakishly strong. Ali was strong, not as strong as Foreman. Ali did so well against Foreman in the clinches partly because he was a cleverer, more experienced boxer and partly because of his mental strength and toughness. He'd hold on and press Foreman's head down inspite of anything Foreman threw at his body while he was initiating that clinch.
I can see no logical argument that Ali was either functionally stronger or simply stronger in anyway that Foreman. I don't see it, and frankly there is nothing there to be seen. People can go on and on about holding somebody head down, and this tells me they aren't really clear on the source material. The muscles in your next are vastly weaker than your muscles in your arms, shoulders and back. Which is to say, somebody weaker can hold a person who is stronger physically, head down. Yet does that somehow mean they are stronger? Of course not. Ali did nothing in that fight that indicated he was stronger than Foreman. It's like this, Ali was physically inferior to Frazier, Frazier was physically inferior to Foreman. Yet somehow, Ali could be stronger than Foreman... Yeah, the logic isn't flowing there.
Foreman was of course stronger...as Bonavena and Liston were stronger than Ali too,...but the illusion Ali projected that he was their equal or better was because of his intelligent use of leverage and placement.
There's a moment in Ali-Frazier 1 where he simply reaches out, grabs Ali by the forearms and pulls him off the ropes...indicating that Joe was pretty strong too.....but Ali could pull off that illusion of dominance by his mastery of leverage, like when a smaller, less strong person can beat an obviously stronger person in arm wrestling.....leverage, that's the trick. I remember an old edition of Boxing Illustrated in the early 70's there was a photo of a smallish young man pinning George Foreman in arm wrestling....much to the hilarity, surprise and amazement of Foreman himself and the crowd looking on.
I agree about leverage L.C., and think you're right there. My only point was, Ail isn't stronger than Foreman
