Who was the absolute meanest!

Meanest has to be James J Jeffries:

He his entire training camp for a World Championship defence was funded by a friend who owned a bar.

After the fight, Jeffries went to the bar for an evening to thank his friend, and was alleged to of spent 25 cents all night!

 

That is true, he did do some bad stuff but from what I heard his last straw with living in Philadelphia was when he got a ticket for driving too SLOW. After that he said something like "I'd rather be a lamp post in Denver than mayor of Philadelphia." The police harassed the hell outta him.

I would say there was a public and private Liston. The public Liston was a tough guy, would sometimes prove how tough he was, the organized crime ties, etc.

I also heard the private Lison was a kind and good humored man who could impersonate Redd Foxx to a "T" and was somewhat lacking in self-confidence. His sparring partners said that he would ask them all the time about their friendship. "You like me, don't you?", they reported him asking time and time again.

In the ring, I think he fought with a lot of anger. Outside of it, I feel that he was somewhat sad that he wasn't given the love and adoration of other champions. The fact that people didn't like him (which would explain his questioning of close friends) really bothered him, and he probably took it out on more than a few people.

 

Good post! Liston had a somewhat sad aura about him, but he definitely had a sense of humour.

yeh from what i read ketchel was a bad mofo...but from the fighters ive seen tyson(mentally unstable) benn gman(badasses). has any1 read paul briggs book...if he'd been a boxer and not muai thai when he was young he'd come close 2 topping the list...(for those of u who don't know his story and love the fight game...get the book...top read)

underated fighter i feel possible the best combonation puncher of all time (am i pushing it?:think )
shear venom on every shot. he would box and move if you were going to fade like in the leonard fight but against a prime fighter he was relentless in his pressure speed agility and abilty to not care about the rules when it came to it.

 

I think you could throw Ali on the list based on how he carried a few fighters just to punish them more.

 

Tyson. He wanted to beat Razor Ruddock up so bad, bad enough to make him his girlfriend and make him kiss Tyson with those big lips of his.

 

yeah mid 60's ali was evil he always seemed to put on the scariest halloween mask of a face when he threw the big shots like that > :twisted:
