incredibly difficult. went for Calzaghe, but Benn put in some fabulous performances. Thing about Benn is, he could lose to fighters who were frankly beneath him, but he could mix it with real elite. bar the Collins fights, he was always - and always would be - competitive. but so is Calzaghe, and he beat Kessler and a still tip top hopkins when he had lost a few paces and nearly all his power

Calzaghe's prime is also very, very difficult to read. Clearly the slugger benn became better as his skills refined. Calzaghe went from nearly all raw power to nearly all blinding speed. he was probably at his best around the time of the Woodhall fight when the two styles started to properly cross over, but we'll never really know.

It's fairly hard to extrapolate from that however as it wasn't just Eubank at the tail end of his career, but Calzaghe at the beginning of his.

I would argue that even the post-prime Calzaghe of now would be far more problematic for Eubank stylistically than the Calzaghe he faced.

Definitely agree with this. Calzaghe was a little crude until he hurt his hands. he seemed to develop his skills around 99-01

When Calzaghe beats some more prime, live, quality opponents I could consider him #1. Only has one to date (Kessler).

    Herol Graham.

Actually I'd back Benn to flatten him (possibly) and Calzaghe to outwork him but still...

I have to say the Calzaghe of 2004-2006 would beat the lot of them. I think a prime Watson would have given him his CLOSEST fight. Benn & Eubank in their primes would have given him TOUGH fights where he'd have to draw on his great chin, fitness and work-rate.

Benn was very beatable by a skilled boxer with a good chin. Calzaghe has his number if he boxes sensibly for 12 rounds. If macho Calzaghe takes over then he could be in a whole world of trouble. That's why I think the 2005 Calzaghe would be less inclined to trade with Benn out of respect for his power.

Eubank switched off too much in his fights and got outboxed by Watson who I consider a level above Eubank anyway.

    1. Calzaghe
    2. Watson - could possibly have got better
    3. Benn
    4. Eubank

Michael Watson for me. Skilled boxer puncher. Learned his trade the old fashion way. Boxer puncher. Excellent defense and physically very strong.
