leonard hearns duran hagler leanard beat them all, hagler only lost one but always had the weight advantage
Leonard is set in stone but Duran? The guy never knocked out a great fighter, and the one he beat (Leoanrd) beat him easily the next 2 times he fought him. Talk about overrated.
If you add Benitez to the equation, Hearns is number 2 and Hagler 3. Duran never knocked out a great fighter. Which is amazing that he is rated as so great by people. Unbelievable overrating. Number one for what? Beating Buchanan while he lost to Benitez who was a 140 pound champ starting off, not too much higher than Roberto.
Had Hearns got the decision against Ray like he should have in 1989, he would have beaten 2 of the 3, and also beaten Cuevas and Benitez..
This is always such a hard choice, and Hearns always seem to be the underdog. It's between him and SRL imo, although all 4 were amazing.
Duran has a very good resumé. Esteban De Jesus, Ernesto Marcel - a win often over-looked - Ken Buchanan, Sugar Ray Leonard - one of the all-time great wins of any fighter - Iran Barkley at MW, Carlos Palomino, Pipino Cuevas, the likes of Vilomar Fernandez, Saoul Mamby and Davey Moore aren't bad added to the mix either, don't know if I've forgotten anybody. He was both a dominant light-weight and successful through a number of weights. He has very good wins from 130 to 160. He was relatively competitive with a prime Hagler when past his best and miles above his best weight, although I think he lost more clearly than the scorecards suggest. H2H, he ranks highly across a number of weights. 135 is self-explanatory, his performances in Leonard I and against Palomino see him rank well in a stacked division historically. Even his performance against Barkley at 160 sees him do better than expected at MW. He may even rank highly H2H at 130 when all is said and gone, particularly as the division isn't stacked. Ability wise, a complete fighter. A lot of people unfortunately assume he was just a bull-dozer and a relentless pressure fighter with a good chin and and damaging power, and overlook the technical aspects of his game. An excellent defense, impecable timing and great shot selection are just a few of the things that often get over-looked in his game. He does got slightly over-rated by some, I have seen him as high as #4 on some all-time great P4P lists and I don't think he believes there. Is he top 10 material though? That can easily be justified in my mind. EDIT: On his loss to Benitez, he was more soundly beaten than the cards suggest, but Benitez was in his prime and Duran was in the stage where his legs had gone. I don't hold that against him, Benitez was a helluva fighter, and an excellent 154lber. Duran was way above his best weight aswell, so I don't know why you are bringing up 'Benitez was a former 140lber' as if Duran didn't come from 130/135.
Not only was he a natural lightweight, but his resume is phenomenal. He turned pro in 1968 and he beat Iran Barkley in 1988. He stepped up to beat SRL, fought very well against Hagler. Not to mention Davey Moore, Pipino Cuevas, Carlos Palomino, Esteban De Jesus, Ken Buchanan. From 1968 to 1980 he was untouchable, barring a loss to De Jesus, which he went on to avenge.
H2H - Leonard & Hagler P4P - Duran & Leonard Duran gets a slight nod in terms of greatness over Leonard only because of SRLs lack of fights compared to Duran`s.... Leonard without his retirements & another 10-15 decent-good wins on his record edges Duran IMO.... Hagler`s biggest black mark was his refusal to go up in weight like the others did but he was still one of the best ever p4p.... Hearns would have beat all of them & ranked higher than all of them IMHO if he had the chin of either 3....
