a wee clue you can't win a world title if your not a pro!
All kidding aside Dick was a great fighter if I remember correct he boxed 660 times only losing 30 magnificent.

Don't they have world Amatuer titles? Or games? He could have fought in those and been the World Amatuer champion ? No?

    He wasn't a pro?

Geez, I never knew that?! Thanks, Billy!

The question is: was he good enough to be if he turned pro?

Dick McTaggert I would say is Britains greatest ever amateur.

Dick McTaggart said he wasn't dedicated enough for the pro's so thats why he stayed amateur.

Dick won - Gold at the 1956 olympics in Melbourn and the Val Barker trophy for the games outstanding boxer.

Bronse at the 1960 olympics in Rome

Gold at the 1958 commonwealth games in Cardif

Gold at the 1968 European amateur championships in Belgrade

    Mctaggart was also a 5 time ABA champion (1956, 1958, 1960, 1963 and 1965)

He won 610 of his 634 amateur bouts.

The world amateur championship wasn't around in Dicks day or he probably would have that in the bag as well.

You're probably right. A nice fella Dick as well. I'm lucky enough to have been in his company a few times.

Dick said it was the intense road work and dieting that put him off turning pro. I read this somewhere a while ago but i cant remember the source :patsch

Never met him myself but he seems a chirpy character :good

In the same time I was talking about earlier,Dick was on TV regularly,as amateur boxing was on the BBC at least once a month. He was very clever, but it was said he didn't have a style to fit pro boxing, although I fail to see someone with so much talent having at least some success. As seen by his record,he beat many boxers from the old Soviet Union, and they were pros in everything but name.I believe he worked as well as spending time in the RAF.Am I right in thinking Dave Charnley beat him as an amateur?
