In my opinion, I’d give the edge to Whitaker, considering that he was able to dodge rapid fire to the head and body. But Locche is super duper near Whitaker in terms of defense. But what do you think?

Pure defensive skills they're both almost equal, the edge going to Whitaker who had better lateral movement.

Locche was in there just to make you miss while Whitaker was there to make you miss and outpunch you. I give the edge to Sweet Pea.

Pretty much the big difference between the 2. There's no question that Whitaker was the more skilled, versatile fighter.

I actually like Locche's offense and don't write it off, but when you're talking about defense, in a sport that is scored-hopefully-on getting offense off while negating the other person's offense, you have to talk about what someone can put on you while practicing defense, to really evaluate the defense accurately. I mean, I've seen Shane Mosley be defensively talented when he's just doing the defense. A lot of world class athletes can do that when that's all they're doing. MIguel Cotto can look like Whitaker for forty seconds. So, Pete's defense is the more valuable defense in that respect. That means it's better. In terms of raw talent to make people miss punches, maybe they're inseparable. In terms of actually incorporating it into a dangerous total winning package, I see a clear edge. But it's not like Locche wasn't able to scuff people up and take the victory at a high level. I'm just more impressed with how Pernell applies it with his offense and how much mustard he can put on a sandwich while he's in a food fightandwhatthellisthisanalogythatI'musingoutofnowhere. I need to think before I type so that doesn't happen anymore.

People tend to forget that Locche's defense can be neutralized. Peppermint Frazer showed that using distance, clever movement, and forcing Locche to lead. Locche's biggest weakness was his overly defensive mindset and lacking much of an offense.
