It was pretty clear to see he wasnt the fighter he would become...His defense and overall skill set got better over time...You could see the natural defensive instincts there but he wasnt at his best yet.

Though Im not to into the arguement that he was any less prepared to deal with Roy...I dont think the craftier, more defensive minded Bernard does any better to tell you the truth.

Chavez was 31 when he faced Pea. Pea was 33 when he faced DLH. And Pea was coming off looking bad in previous fights with Hurtado and Rivera when he faced Oscar. Chavez looked damaged goods in which fights prior to the Whitaker fight? The Haugen fight? The Camacho fight? The Alli fight? Chavez was steamrolling everyone at the time.

Toney looked utterly incompetent against Jones, Chavez looked much more formidable against Pea, prime or not. Jones looked great against Toney, dominated more than Whitaker did against Chavez, but CHavez was a higher caibre opponent.

Jones may have had a bit more natural talent, that's arguable, but accomplishments-wise there is no debate.

jones was more athletically gifted. Pea was a better pure boxer and, in the latter stages of his career, when his reflexes had diminshed, proved himself to be a better, grittier fighter as well. Jones I don't think ever had the true heart of a fighter but, at his best, was damn near untouchable and a joy to watch.

super middleweight version of roy, pound for pound, beats any version of whitaker in my opinion. Overall, though, based on his resume, whitaker has to be regarded a little higher.

I'm of the opinion that Pea won both the JCC and Oscar fights (and obviously the Ramirez one as well), so i've got Pernell way ahead on resume. Jones was the more athletically gifted whilst Pea had the better classic skills. I'd have to rank Pea ahead of RJJ but they're not too far away from each other, especially considering Jones got himself a version of the heavyweight title.

Sweat Pea, even well past prime he gave young stars like ODLH and Tito seriously difficult fights.

Both fighters were great at what they did, but Sweet Pea was better.

    Whitaker.

At his best, Jones was a phenomenon. I don't think anyone in history could beat him at 168. From 94-96 he was amazing.

However, Whitaker had a plan B, a plan C and a plan D. He was complete, well-rounded, versatile, just one of the very, very best boxers in all of history.

Agreed, I think the main difference was Whitaker`s completeness & possibly toughness too....

Once both guys were pushed in tough fights while past their best, Pea proved more, way more & I also think the vintage displays by Pea can match those of Jones & there are a little MORE Pea masterclasses than Jones masterclasses vs good comp IMO.

Na, Id accept that **** when comparing Roy to MOST fighters but Whitaker aint one of them.

Both guys were boxing virtuoso`s at their peak but Whitaker could embarass you in so many different ways, just look at all his virtuoso displays, Haugen, Ramirez II, Nelson, Chavez, McGirt II.... he used a completely different style in all of those fights.
Roy was good at what he done... the best actually.... but Whitaker could do everything in there.
