Chavez by the time Whitaker fought him, was streets ahead of either Hopkins and Toney, when Jones fought them.

Yes, he was in a new weight category, but it's not like he suddenly jumped up three divisions. He moved up one division after building slowly himself up from the lighter divisions through the years. Every boxing magazine worth it's salt had Julio as the #1 fighter in the world pound for pound, going into the Whitaker fight.

Hopkins was not yet at his best; film of his career provide proof of this.
Azumah also moved up one division to fight Whitaker, and it wasn't the few extra pounds that made the difference between winning and losing.

Even Azumah himself has offered no excuse for the loss; he himself said that Whitaker was simply a great fighter.

How do you know this? Toney had defended his title more then 10 times, and was considered top P4P in the world and if I remember correctly the favorite in the fight. Hopkins I believe had 1 more fight then Roy at the time and would go on to completely dominate the divison.

Chavez meanwhile would knock out 2 cabbies and then lose a split decision to Frankie Randall. Clearly he wasnt the same he once was. I take nothing from Pea, who dominated the fight and beat a fighter ranked 1 in the world at the time, but I not only think that Hopkins and Toney are better fighters P4P then Chavez, but I also think that Roy beat better versions of them as fighters then the Chavez Pea fought.

It's Whitaker for me, not that there's much between them.

I think that this is the best highlight of him on YouTube

Hits the nail right on the head. It's close but clear for the sweetest pea in the garden.

Pernell. Best fighter of his era, period, imo. Just the complete package plus. That plus is his defense, one of the very finest in the long history of this sport.

Roy Jones is perhaps the most amazing athlete I've ever seen -- it sometimes looked positively unfair in the ring, and this was against the best at the world stage -- but he didn't prove as much, he didn't prove it as long, and he didn't prove it as hard.

Looking good on a highlight reel is neat, but it don't bring home the bacon.

Whitaker was more skilled but Roy had more athletic abilities.

Pathetic opinion. Please explain to me how a win over a green Bernard Hopkins, is better than a win over the P4P #1.

    -

Both were extraordinary fighters, both have amazing natural talent, but I will plump for Whitaker slightly. I feel he has the stronger resume overall in terms of competition and ranks equally as highly H2H.

Don't blame him. If it doesn't have the surname Mayweather, he doesn't have a ****ing clue.

Let me repeat what I've repeated numerous times in the thread and if you had bother to read you would have seen it. Hopkins would go on to dominate his division and a 12 year undefeated streak. JCC would knock out 2 bums and then lose a decision to frankie Randall.

Roy had one more fight then then Hopkins and was fighting vitually one handed. JCC was fighting in a weight class 2 above what many believe to be his best. Ring magazines P4P is a subjective list and not the authority.

Also if you believe JCC was as good a fighter as Hopkins I'll laugh in your face.

    Whitaker for me.

Hopkins/Toney wins are credible because of what Hopkins went on to do, not because he was a great fighter WHEN Jones beat him.

Toney was a good win regardless of the weight issue. Jones had the style to beat Toney in top shape.

There is no doubt in my mind who was more skilled and it is Whitaker by a long way imo.

Who was more versatile? Whitaker was not as effective fighter from long range because of his lack of height, However Jones did not have an inside game imo.
