I feel his victory over Machen was a one out of ten time event ( with a horrific stoppage ) and his victory over Floyd twice reversed in decisive fashion .. other than that he had absolutely nothing .. for sure one of the three or four worst fighters to ever hold the heavyweight title ..

I didn't say he beat set ups .. I just think following the Machen and Patterson bouts he was hailed as some great heavyweight when he was not .. he was destroyed in the rematch and in the rubber match showed a pretty average at best chin .. a couple of bouts later the bell saved him from a KO loss to Brian London while still a young man without a lot of fights he was done .. I don't think he was terrible but vastly over rated for a short window before obscurity ..

We all remember this fight well. So well that it actually landed on a Tuesday...

Just playing with you my man. One of USA's most watched fights, I believe. This made Booker T. Word a household name for a bit.

I respect that .. I actually read the recent auto-bio on him and really liked it .. maybe I feel that way because he got out so early but unfortunately it turned out not early enough for his health .. one thing for sure, his power was devastating and real.

Good call. After getting KOd by Marciano in the 2nd round one writer said that Mathews was a figment of his manager's imagination. Jack Hurley was Mathews manager and he was a character.

Yes, that was hype job, Hembrick, I remember reading about him at the time in the Ring magazine, he was spoke about as the hard luck kid from the olympics who only won silver because he missed the bus to the final at the 1988 olympics, he was considered a hot prospect before this KO, "I feel like a champ!".

In the UK defo Bruno. Price was hyped for a while but the hype never stopped for Bruno after every ko loss. An amiable oaf and good loser. Haye also deserves an honourable mention. Bum carousel, no shows, faked injuries, and the Bellew shame. Stateside I'd pick Morrison. I can forgive the Mercer loss but Bentt has to be one of the worst losses of a belt in recent memory. Bentt was retired by Herbie Hide next fight which added to the shame, and we saw what a real heavy - Vitali - did to that same Hide.
