Does anyone know who the boxer was who was shot dead in a London (South London, I think. Brixton maybe, or Peckham) nightclub some time last year? If you remember the story, I think he might have been working the doors and asked a couple of gang-wankers to put their cig out, so they shot him and killed him. ****ing scum!

There was also that very young boxer, he was playing semi-pro football too and I think he was trying to decide whether he was going to continue as a pro-boxer or pro-footballer.
He was shot dead outside a pub in Hyde, Manchester (where Ricky Hatton's from) or in next door Ashton-Under-Lyne.
Can anyone remember who he was? He was Wes Brown's (Manchester United defender) bezzie mate, if that helps.

That has also reminded me of another up and coming boxer from near Hyde (can't remember where exactly, somewhere around East Manchester though) who was stabbed to death, either last year or the year before. I really don't know anything about him except that he was meant to be a pretty fantastic talent and it was expected that he would - or could - really go far. He was said to be really pretty special and he was only 17 or something.

While I'm talking about terrible tragedies and young talent cut short before their prime, or just horrible *******s trying to destroy lives... who can give a good story about the crazed life of Eamonn Magee? I would really appreciate a good, knowledgeable story teller to tell us all about the many times people (like the IRA... or was it UDA?) were trying to kill him. He is one tough ****, is Eamonn!!

To keep the thread moving. I would be interested in hearing tales about your local boxers and the sad reasons they were never allowed to show the World just how good they were.

Thunder... Tell me about the Romani Gypsy* from your town who drunkenly annoyed too many people and spent his last seconds on the pub floor but not before taking out half the pub!

Bladerunner... What about the kid from Madeira, who was stabbed to death after trying to stop some ugly ***** slapping about his girfriend on the street!

BigReg... Let's hear about the young kid from North Philly, who - though he had struggled so hard to get away from street life by spending his waking hours in the gym - like all the young kids from his neighbourhood, he couldn't escape the pull of ganglife and instead of making headlines for winning belts, made two lines in the local paper as one of the many hundred victims of guns and gang life in Philadelphia.

Betty Swollocks... How many kids do you know who lost their lives and predicted boxing careers due to Glasgow's rampaging knife and gang crime?

Words... What do you know about a lad from Moss Side, Manchester, who, like the kids in North Philly, couldn't escape South Manchester's gangster lifestyle, although his boxing trainer sacrificed everything to keep him in the gym and off the streets. His reputation in the ring had grown throughout the city and caught the attention of the Cheetham Hill gang in the North of the city, or The Gooch, another of Moss Side's notorious gangs and arch enemies of the Doddies, the firm of the boxer. A 16 year old new recruit to a rival gang, desperate to prove his colours finds the boxer an easy target and a known name and off he goes on his mountain bike, with his "spray and pray" Uzi he spits out 12 bullets, all hitting the house behind him but through luck alone, the 13th hit the young boxer - turned gangbanger - turned a families heartbreak. Ending the life of a possible Vegas headliner.

OK. I know. A very depressing thread but I'm sure almost all of us most have stories like this. They don't have to have been killed. For instance, an extremely interesting and sad story is that of Kirkland Laing. The British (Nottingham) WelterWeight who won a split decision against one of the very best of all time, Roberto Duran! But unfortunately, due to his chaotic background and messed up head would lose fights against journey men, after he went without any training, spent the night before the fight drinking in the bar and the hours before the fight sat in his car, smoking a spliff.
He is currently living back in Nottingham (with heavy alcohol and crack problems), having moved back up there from Brixton, London, after someone pushed him off a bridge, almost killing him.

They guy is an amazing character and I hope, if you haven't already seen it, you will enjoy this short (10-15 min) documentary made by big Kirkland fan, Steve Bunce. With concern, he travels around Brixton trying to find Laing. After many troubles, he eventually finds the great man, only to find he isn't so great anymore and is not little more than a sad, wretched shell of a man...

I really, really hope we can get this thread going. I'm sure there are some great stories out there. This forum is populated by hundreds of people, from all countries and all kinds of areas in those countries. Rich and poor, sinner and saint, criminal and copper.

    Thankyou!

*I know Romani Gypsies don't necassarily hail from Romania (I believe they are of Indian and general areas of Eastern Europe/Western Asia) but I also know there are some great numbers of Romani in your area.

There's no point in me saying it again, I'll just be typing up what I already said.

Go on mate, read the thread and reply, vă rog, colega.

I know it's a dead long post and I know it will put a lot of people off but I reckon we could hear some great stories if people can be arsed to read and reply.

Nice one, cheers for that mate.

Have you got anything to say about him? As a boxer or as a feller?

I'll see if I can find any info on his fight record.
