James Toney v Michael Nunn Roy Jones v Bernard Hopkins 1 Tito Trinidad v Oscar dlh Marlon Starling v Donald Curry 1 Julio Cesar Chavez v Meldrick Taylor
Nunn was clearly the favorite over Toney. At the time, it seemed like Toney was largely a good fighter that Nunn would outbox over 12. Jones was considered the best bright young talent in boxing when he faced Hopkins. DeLaHoya-Trinidad was kind of a toss up. Not sure what the Vegas odds were, but had to be pretty close. Curry-Starling I didn't get that much attention at the time. I'd say Curry was the favorite although Starling had more experience. I think Chavez was pretty clearly the favorite over Taylor. Looking back, we know that Taylor fought really well and almost won. But going into the fight, it seemed like Chavez was going to be way too much (at least to me).
Chavez was a decent-ish favourite, but... Anyone who fought they knew anything about boxing and bet, put money on Taylor. It seemed obvious, Chavez had slipped since moving up to 140, and Taylor had the tools that Chavez struggled with (mainly speed). We were all going to make a killing, finally the bookies were getting one wrong big time...
