    but who was the first fighter be effective switch hitting?

    Jeffries did it in the second Sharkey fight, probably because his left was injured.

    Tiger Flowers was fond of doing it.

    Perhaps the earliest reference to it was William Bengigo against Ben Caunt. Caunt became so frustrated with the tactic that he fouled Bendigo and lost the bout on a DQ.
