Who was the greater fighter: Hopkins@160 '97-'01 or Mayweather@130 '98-'01?

I'd back only one sfw ever to beat Mayweather (Chavez), and there's another one I am undecided over (Arguello).

I'd back only two mw's ever to beat Hopkins (Robinson and Monzon), and there's another one I am undecided over (Hagler).

Middleweight is of course a far deeper and stronger division than superfeather, but this gives you an idea of just how good both men were at their best weights and in their primes.

In terms of sheer effectiveness, who was the better fighter and why?

both were incredible stands, I think I'll give the edge to BHop, longer reign more and more impressive defenses. Floyd was an absolute beast at superfeather though

Splitting hairs really, but I would probably expect Hopkins to do a bit better against the field at Middleweight then Mayweather would at an equally deep division in Lightweight (and I don't think the 5lbs makes a difference with him).

I agree with you. But that's not the question at hand. Floyd or B-Hop, who you got?

I'll take the 130lb version of Mayweather. I think he was the best fighter I've ever seen at that weight. He still had an amazing defence but he was much more offensive. Floyd threw fantastic combinations at sfw and usually tried to finish fighters off when he had them in trouble.

I think B-Hop also hit his real peak around '99-'01, where his aggresiveness and intelligence really camt together to make a complete fighter.

Two of the best, no doubt.

Are you saying who was better in that period or who achieved greater things within that period?

I personally vote Floyd for both.

I recognise than Hopkins is an ATG but to be honest...he just hasnt beat that many elite fighters of his own size. He beat ODLH...who was too small, no way to rationalise that as being a big win, he was too small. He beat Tito who was a good MW, nothing more, tailor made for Hopkins really, he had the chin to nullify the power (whats left of it without handwrap) and the skills to outbox him, Wright embarrassed Tito too.

I dont care too much for his 20 title defenses...their overrated, besides most of the title defenses came from 1 belt. Put it this way, if PBF/Pac were to fight 20 opponents in a row of the same quality as his "defenses" they would be mauled in this forum...can you imagine Floyd or Pac taking on next...Simon Brown, and then Andrew Council, and then a rubbermatch with Robert Allen...they would be crucified!

He then looses to Calzaghe & Taylor, IMO 2 of the best fighters around his weight class at the time...he also lost clearly to RJJ but I wont hold that against him. He beat a very beatable 1-d Pavlik and Tarver...good win over Glen Johnson.

He hasnt beaten 1 HOF fighter of his size. He ranks as an ATG for his longevity and being able to fight at such an older age. Resume wise or even in terms of ability, he always looked beatable to me.

I predicted Taylor to beat him based off on what I saw in Eastman(very average fighter same size as hopkins) vs Hopkins.

There was better competition at the 130 division
