A clubfighter? That is insulting to a man that beat Kid Berg, Lou Ambers, Baby Arizmendi, Jimmy McLarnin and Kid Chocolate.

Sorry but judging by the films I get every impression Hagler's skills far exceeded his but I'll look again. Even so, it doesnt even seem like a fair comparison

I can take it if you think he had a primitive style that wouldnt work today but the guy beat the best around his weight divisions of his generation that does not qualify him as a clubfighter regardless of style.

Clubfighter might be too harsh but he surely is not impressive and you can see from the films he holds way too much-something he could not get away with facing some of the better fighters like Armstrong. I've seen better

No he wasn't, he was the prototype for James Toney, a counterpuncher who lured his opponents in close and then slipped and countered them.

Tony Canzoner was not a club fighter. Far from it. He was one of the truly great little men of the sport. Despite his size, he was an elite fighter in the lightweight division and even did well against welterweights. He was an smart boxer, a sharp puncher, and had temendous skill.

You had respect for him anyway? This is a guy who thinks Terry Norris is superior to Sugar Ray Leonard.

very true but he did not always use those skills and in some fights got drawn into toe to toe fights which cost him

I guess some people just can't accept it when their favorite fighter gets his hole busted.

Are split decisions more to your liking?

Agreed the Canzoneri/Ross era hadnt reached the peak of the sport yet, Hagler competed when the sport was in a better era with fighters with better physical and technical ability. Not to mention all this Canzoneri wasnt as consistant or as dominant as Hagler

I'd also agree to an extent about weight hopping being somewhat overrated, no one picks Pacquiao as the best of all time or the best in any of the 10 weight classes hes competed successfully against. Some men just add bodyweight better.

Hagler is arguably the no1 MW of all time, what weight is Canzoneri top5 at?

I never thought I would hear anyone call Canzoneri a clubfighter on here.

That pretty much blew my paradigm of ranking fighters by quality. I'll have to change my assessment of Barney Ross to that of "journeyman/fringe contender", and realize that by that measure there's only been about 2 actual "beltholder" level fighters in the history of the sport- and that's being generous.
