Who was the greatest and WHY: Oscar v Tito

We can make this easy. Did De La Hoya not make his name getting in fights with faded legends and getting titles off the weakest champs in the division? Did De La Hoya ever try to clean out any division and show he was the most dominant? Did De La Hoya blantently duck all opponents who were champs in their division, and when he did not duck them, did he not lose?

The answer to those questions tell you why he is not as good as Tito.

Oscar avoided guys like Tszyu and Nelson for a reason. When he stepped up a bit in 1999 to face Ike Quartey, he basically lost the fight. I love how the Oscarsexual ***gots of ESB love to ***** and whine about OScar's close losses, and REFUSE to acknowledge them, but run like Oscar in the final 3 rounds when Jack Presscot confronts them with Blatant Robberies, such as DLH-Whitaker, DLH-Quartey and ESPECIALLY DLH-Sturm.....any takers? I've watched the fight several times, and while I've always scored it for DLH, it was always close. I've never had him winning by more than 1 or 2 points.

I disagree here. Yeah, he only won two other fights, but the 2nd fight was a damned good showing after a 2 year lay off. Yeah, a most people expected Trinidad to beat Mayorga, but they didn't expect him to hand Mayorga his head as brutally as he did on the way to becoming the FIRST to stop him.

I'll give you this and brought it up in my own thread about these two fighters. However, that's something that's always rubbed me the wrong way about legacies and rankings. As far as I'm concerned actual skill level really shouldn't be all that relavant. It's about who you fight, and how you fought them.

Also, his problem was never boxers, it was getting his own offense off. In the Whitaker and Reid fights Tito beat fighters that could “box” better than him, but couldn't stop him from imposing his will. That's what DLH, Hopkins, and Wright did. Tito couldn't get his offense off, and when he can't he's done.

Fine, but that doesn't mean all that much to me, never has.

When it comes to fighting the same people I'm nearly always going to give it to the guy who fought that person first. Particularly in this case because many of the guys they both fought had 0's before meeting Trinidad, making them bigger fights. Not only that, but it could be easily argued that Trinidad RUINED Campas, Vargas, and Carr and was the first to dispell the aura surrounding the iron chinned Mayorga. I view many of those fights for DLH as sloppy seconds.

Lastly I'd like to add my own opinion in addition to my responses to your original post. While Trinidad's losses may have been clearer than DLH's so were his wins. Trinidad has exactly ONE controversial fight in the win column, the fight against DLH. DLH on the other hand had EXTREMELY conterversial wins against Whitaker, Quartey, and Sturm as well as having a far more controversial loss to Hopkins due to the fact that a lot of people simply didn't buy the last punch.

 

DLH should have won the TRINIDAD fight but he didnt .He got gassed and got on his bike from rd 8-12 due to the fear of getting his head knocked off completely.DLH is still fighting to this day thanks to him running from Trinidad cause had he fought like a "True Warrior" he would have never been the same since,so maybe he was smart to run from Tito but we all know that had he mixed it up with Felix his career would have been over.

The fishes are too small and insignifigant for the Great White to bother with, but no body can **** with them, or face getting eaten. When Jaws decides to feed on a fish, he rips it apart, and eats it, spilling blood, guts and fish bits all over the ocean, and then the little underbelly fishes can dine and feast on the Great White's leftovers.

DLH was looking GREAT boxing Titos ears off but then he ran outta gas and started to run after the 9th ......Had he mixed it up with Tito his career would have been over.Tito would have changed Oscars life with one single punch and Dela knew this so Oscar problably did the smartest thing so that he could finish his career.

 

I would also just like to add that I am not a DLH hater. While he was never a favorite of mine I always acknowledge his skill, heart, and resume. I even rooted for him against Hopkins and Mayweather. I'm just in disagreement about where he stands next to Trinidad.

p.s. Oh, and about the Mayweather fight, I don't care if the judges had a split dicision. I had Mayweather winning that fight easily.

-At WW Trinidad never fought Quartey. This would have been a real 50/50 fight.
-At WW Trinidad busted up a very very very shot Whitaker who is Tito's biggest name at WW besides Oscar. And Whitaker still gave Tito all he could handle though this ex-rehab version of Whitaker was not the same P4P#1 rated fighter that Oscar faced without getting hit half as much as Tito got hit. This wasn't a gift decision for Hoya. Watch it and score it (funny, a couple of months ago someone in Classics forum started a thread about the "robbery" and stated that they were actualy just rewatching it. By page two the original poster clarified it was not a robbery though the thread was started as such and the poster is a well known Whitaker lover).
-At WW Tito's biggest name beside Whitaker is Hoya who dominated him.
