Who was the greatest and WHY: Oscar v Tito

    Didn't I? :patsch

    I started the post to ask for reasons WHY Tito was better, and debate the issue. A couple have done that, most chose to criticize De La Hoya instead, which I'm sure you will see by the start of the thread, is exactly what I didn't want. Debate means responding btw, otherwise threads would be very short and the forum wouldn't be much fun, that's why I reply.

    I've already given him MAJOR props for the Quartey fights, but you DO KNOW that Mayorga and Vargas had been dropped 8 TIMES by Tito before DLH got to them (5-Vargas, 3-Mayorga), them guys were DONE and btw, he had already smashed their myths....

    He didn't show heart against Hopkins?:huh
    He was outclassed for sure, but what were Lampley and Foreman JUST saying as he got knocked out "He'll never retreat, he still trying.":-(
    DLH lost to the SAME guy with a punch VERY FEW people believe in.

    This is a close call to make!

    Tito beat up Obba Carr, Campas, Vargas & Mayorga before Oscar fought them. Neither one of these was ever the same fighter after Tito whipped them! When Oscar fought these guys they were already softened up! You have to factor this into your descision. All of Tito's fights were exciting except when he fought Oscar. Oscar fought in a safety first style against Tito. Forget what Jim Lampley said about Oscar putting on a "superb display of boxing"! Even though I was for Tito when they fought, I thought the fight was a draw. If Tito was still fighting regularly he would not hesitate to fight Margarito! Also Tito went down swinging against Hopkins! He did not punk out!

    But De La Hoya performed far better against Hopkins than Trinidad did?? Sorry, but having watched Hopkins-Tito, I think Tito was pretty intimidated and knew early on he was losing the fight, and fought like it. And never in his losses was he as feeble as Trinidad was v Wright, he got utterly utterly dominated, owned.

    Many fighters come back from multiple knockdowns with no ill effects (Trinidad himself was knocked down quite a lot of times in his career, including some from Vargas and Mayorga), Vargas and Mayorga were definitely not shot when DLH fought them, though obv Trinidad gets credit for beating them first and beating them convincingly.

    As I've said before, I think Tito was tremendous too, but I disagree with your reasons for this.

    Mayorga ius not in their class and never was. Vargas was on his way down when he fought Oscar, that's why Arum had Oscar fight him. He was ripe for the taking.
    You have to realize that Vargas, in the 3 fights before he fought Oscar, had been knocked down 5 times, even knocked down by weak-hitting Rivera, wobbled repeatedly by his former sparring partner Flores and was sent to the hospital TWICE and held overnight he was beaten up so bad. All in the 3 fights just before he fought Oscar. Was he ready to be beaten? Hell yes. And to think that some think that was Oscars defining fight :lol: :lol: Sure, Vargas was roided up and looked in great shape but those overnight visits to the hospital say a different story.

    I think Quartey was DLH's best night.

    I think Vargas was Trinidad's.

    Both great fights and great wins.

    I thought the he Vargas and Ruelas fights, among others, were better for DLH.

    De La Hoya deserved to lose the Quartey fight. I don't care how good of a finish he had, he spent much of the fight doing jack but staring at Ike and taking jabs and the occassional right hand.

    Ken Morita is a disgrace.

    It wasn't a tough fight to score, such as DLH's bouts with Pea and the rematch with Balco Mosley.

    I disagree. I had DLH sneaking the Quartey, Whitaker and second Mosley fights, and losing the Sturm and first Mosley fights.

    Ruelas was an underrated win and great performance, but I wouldn't place it up there alongside Quartey and Vargas. Actually, I think Hernandez was a better win than Ruelas.
