Not necessarily the greatest fighter, but who was the best champion? I know that can be defined differently, but when I think of a great champion I think of class, in and out of the ring as well as accomplishments. Juan Manuel Marquez gets my vote. The late, great Vernon Forrest get a mention also.

Don't agree Hopkins - one of greatest fighters yes but champion only sporadically from 2005.

Likewise Vitali doesn't have the span as champ but Wlad, despite the losses deserves mention.

Calzaghe unbeaten to end 2008 should be strong but some of resume doesn't make it (yes I am a JC fan) and that detracts a little.

I'm struggling to get past the Pac-man

Wladimir or Hopkins. Hopkins dominated middle for the early-mid 00s, Wlad has dominated heavy from mid-late 00s. Guys like Pacquiao and Marquez weight-jumped too much to merit the title of best champion. A great champion needs to have stability, consistency and dominance IMO. An extended unified reign is the hallmark of a great champion nowadays.

Hopkins certainly, he still made 21 title defences.
JMM gets my vote, great champion
Klit Bro's dominant since Lewis's retirement

May and Calzaghe had been champion unbroken until their collective retirement in 2008. Post retirement Floyd doesn't care about titles or he would have been WBA champ by now. I guess being the #1 Welterweight is enough.

I would agree with Hopkins, but his racial tactics and disrespect of other fighters never sat well with me. Great fighter, but I dont consider him to be as classy as some others.
