Who Was The Greatest Champion???

yeah probably the brown bomber. He wasn't the first to come to mind but it is definitely him.

I had Larry holmes and marvin hagler for their dominance. But could just as easily say prime Ali or rocky marciano for the same reason.

As I was read the thread title and then read your intro words, only one man fitted your description imo, yes, the great Joe Louis.

There can be only one...

 

Just as a Boxing fan I say Joe. But, Ali has had the biggest impact of any champion. Nobody can deny that, he talked trash, but he was not only a great boxer, he was a cultural icon and the only name that everybody knows when you mention boxing.

 

Armstrong for me, no one but him held three titles simultaneously. But Louis clearly is up there along with the Robinson's, Ali's, Moore's and Duran's.

At least as a champion , Henry Melody Jackson's successful title defenses were usually against much lesser opposition than his overall opposition .

Joe Louis is a pathetic mention in such a thread , should get his dues in n overblown hypejobs thread .

It's between 3 men for me.

Joe Louis, Ruby Fitz and Henry Armstrong.

Louis is the poster boy of dominance and as a champion he really proved his worth above the field.

Armstrong and fitz both achieved absolute p4p supremacy as a champion. Fitz was the mw champ when he stepped up and knocked out the hw king. He was outstrengthed by a true hw and still had enough to capture the lhw crown.

As featherweight champion armstrong beat both the welter and lightweight champion and just prior to the end of the year 1938 he ruled over 3 of the 8 boxing divisions and he would go onto better the mw champion.

These 3 defined what a champion should be for me. Despite the amazement I have of fitz and what he achieved, he was defeated by james and then challenged for the lhw belt so technically wasn't as good a champion.

Brings it to louis or armstrong. The man who ruled for a decade or the man who ruled half of boxing.

Had armstrong took out the murderers row i'd say it was him. Louis didn't fight bivins but when he returned from active duty he beat jersey joe who'd just beaten him so I give him the edge.

For me it's gotta be Joe Louis.

 

One name that has not been mentioned yet, but is probably in the argument, is George Dixon.

Tommy Ryan should be mentioned as well.

 

Armstrong.

Holmes had way too many shaky moments and close calls to be considered IMO. I'd definitely give Louis the big edge in reign there.

 

Being the top man in 3 divisions at the same time is absolutely amazing, 20 pounds apart as well. Think i'm getting a man crush on armstrong (no homo) he's probably replacing fitz in my top 3 bracket.

Armstrong went Feather to Welter and back down to Lightweight as Champ. (Triple champ all at once)

Went after Ceferino Garcia middleweight title 15 months later as the welter weight champ......and failed because he got a draw.

The Jr. Welterweight title was dormant from 1935 - 1946 and Hank couldn't fight for that one.

It still hasnt quite sunk in how he somehow managed to fight Simon Brown and then Robert Allen THREE times, even having to face 80s legend Lupe Aquino to get a shot. no end to the tough challenges in this man's path.
