Crisanto was originally from Venezuela, and based in Ireland.

That was the first name that popped into my head when I saw this thread.

But if Legra is indeed Spanish, then I would rate him over Uzcudun.

Either way, there definitely is a paucity of quality fighters from Spain.

Your right. I live in Spain and boxing is dead here really. Nothing in the papers, nothing on the tele, nada. Big sports are football, basketball (world champions), Tennis, Formula 1 and motorbikes. Chess probably gets more newsprint than Boxing.
They had a big get together of all the sporting greats of the country last year organised by Marca and I think Legra was the only boxer there.
Got talking to some older Spaniards once and they remembered Jose Legra, Mimoun Ben Ali, Miguel Velasquez and Pedro Carrasco. The young lad with them knew of Javier Castillejo but that was it.

I think its Javier Castillejo too. Spain has had a few European champions. Castellejo is the only world champion from Spain that I am aware of.

Jose Urtain got the big build up late 60's early 70's till he ran into "Our Henry". On his way beating that wonderfully named German Heavyweight Arno *****.

Not much luck on the internet about Spanish fighters, However I did see a tidbit about Scott Harrison being jailed in Spain for assault. He got 2 1/2 years in jail. Just this past April.

I travel there once a year for work. I would move there in a heartbeat.

I recall a bantam that wasn't too shabby during the early 70s named Agustin Senin. Don't recall much on him other than he was being touted for a title fight and may have been unbeaten. Can't recall why he retired.

He retired unbeaten 40 odd fights to go into a monastry as far as I know.
My dad lost a European title fight against him said he really rated him highly.

No, he got beat fair and square, was decked early on a couple of times but came back strong at that end. Getting stopped early in the Olivares fight actually helped my dad out in this one, getting hurt early wasn't a new experience for him.
The fight your talking about is Mimoun Ben Ali. Ripped off big time, The daily Mirror headline was "What a load of Barcelona bull" The ref wouldn't even let me dad fight. kepy grabbing hold of him.
It was in the bull ring in Barcelona, My old fella reckons he was even given the bulls dressing room.

Miguel Velasquez and Pedro Carassco both won world titles, albeit by DQ.

Both fights in Spain as well. From what I've read Buchanan's loss to Velasquez was contraversial.
