It’s definitely true. And no, it doesn’t reflect poorly on Ray that he was working with 14 title challengers who happened to not be as good as Joe Louis, haha. Reflects well that people sought him out. There’s a video out there somewhere where Arcel was asked about it and he said about the fifth or sixth time when they went to ring center for referee instructions Joe looked at him and kinda smiled and said, ‘You back again, huh’ or something like that and they both laughed.
When i think of Steward i think of someone that developed a helluva lot of champs from scratch. What other trainers can we compare to him for developing large amounts of champs from scratch and the early stages? so that's an enormous wrap. On top of this he later showed he could take guys with flawed games like Wlad and Lewis and take them not only to the next level but probably the one after that. He also showed he could proficiently handle fighters for shorter terms and step ins like Mike McCallum, Pryor, Chavez, Andries and many others. He was also a master strategist as seen in Hearns victories over the likes of Benitez and Duran. So Steward ticks virtually every box one could think of. He's as good a shout as just about any. Eddie Futch is also an obvious top contender and is as good a shout as any. I temper Eddie somewhat by saying many only know about his great victories and strategic triumphs but the flipside is he has a lot of fights where his carefully designed strategies amounted to nothing such as Hearns - Schuler and Norton - Bobick. Now that's not necessarily on Eddie, you have to have a guy that is good enough to get the job done but it's worth bearing in mind that there were failures among the triumphs. Eddie also did a similar thing with Bowe and Frazier to what Manny did with Lewis and Wlad - he refined their styles and strategies to where they were immensely improved fighters which is not to be taken lightly.
I'm not a fan of DonTurner. Some of his statements seem ridiculous to me. "pad work is bull **** and useless", " cut men are a con", "Ward and Mayweather would be preliminary fighters back in the day," " Marciano was the hardest hitter of all time," " Marciano could beat both Klits on the same night". Toothpick Turner likes to portray himself as "the wise old sage, from back when fighter were real fighters,"he is a self promoter, imo Turner persuaded Holyfield to dispense with a cut man against Moorer saying it was an unnecessary expense, what happened ? Holyfield got cut and Turner couldn't stop the blood. A Corner Without a Cut Man Is a Costly Way to Cut Corners BY MAL FLORENCE APRIL 28, 1994 12 AM PT Facebook Twitter Show more sharing options Don Turner, Evander Holyfield’s trainer, rejected having cut man Ace Marotta in Holyfield’s corner for last Friday night’s heavyweight championship fight against Michael Moorer. “Cut men are the biggest scam in boxing,” Turner told Ron Borges of the Boston Globe. “These guys fly in and they eat like they’re going to the electric chair and you know what? The fighter pays.” As it turned out, Holyfield suffered a deep cut over his left eye in the second round and, without an established cut man, bled much of the rest of the fight. Also, much of Turner’s time between rounds was spent working on the cut instead of advising Holyfield, who lost a majority decision. Holyfield’s usual cut man’s cut? $25,000. If Turner was so good he would have formed long term partnerships with fighters but he didn't,and he was often "assistant trainer" ie bucket man,Just my opinion.
