Max Baer was unequivocally the best heavyweight around for a brief period. If you asked who was the best heavyweight in the world, after he had beaten Max Schmeling and Primo Carnera back to back, there was really only one answer!
It is sad to see Carnera and Baer mentioned in the same breath, as Savold, Valuev, and Martin. They were not the greatest heavyweight champions of all time, but they were lineal champions, and they deserved to be lineal champions. They would have been standouts if they had never won the title!
By that criteria I would say Marciano. Louis, Walcott, Charles, and LaStarza were better from a purely skills standpoint than Marciano. Foreman maybe. His jab is really the only thing that stops me from undoubtedly saying yes.
John Ruiz is easily the least skilled "champion." Actually, he's really a beltholder, and one who held and kept the WBA by illegitimate means, at that. Ruiz had no real boxing skill to speak of, which is why he had to CHEAT to "win" fights, violating the rules against excessive holding in every fight he "won" against decent comp, shamelessly faking "low blows" to get crucial point deductions or undeserved DQ "wins," and relying on Don King to get him gift decisions in fights he clearly lost, the Golota fight being the most egregious of these. Ruiz had all the skill of a high-grade clubfighter. But his connections to King got him title shots he didn't deserve and wins his ability didn't merit.
I don't mean this disrespectfully but I don't have any more to say than what I've said. With no colorline I don't Baer and Carnera would have been champions. We can talk about how Feab matches up against Primo or some such if you like, but you really didn't give me much to go off of as far why exactly you take issue with my assessment of the big guy. I'm sorry my opinion upset you.
It doesn't upset me, but it is just plain wrong. There was no black fighter before Joe Louis, who could have given either of these men, a competitive fight in heir prime!
I was pretty specific and without and details to your challenge I don't know what to tell you. Why do you believe you have to be phenomenal to be a pioneer? Who would you claim pioneered big man posturing in boxing? Willard? Who else is even big enough to propose? Whose posture survives as the staple for bigmen? I didn't say he was great at it but there's a reason why K2 comes to mind when I give Primo props for pioneering posture.
Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't talking about a fantasy matchup. Feab is one of the guys who lost to Primo in a well known fix. That's why I'm saying without the colorline to protect him Primo's not even champion. George Godfrey born Feab Smith Williams beat the **** out of Primster until the sixth when he was DQ'd for being black. That or Kevin R. Smith is a liar. I'm not sure if it's in Sundowners or Black Genesis as I read his books together, but if you're interested I can have a look and be more specific.
Ironic isn't that someone made a thread about should we have a heavyweight sub forum! Maybe we find the most unskilled fighters in the heavyweight division.
I was about to say that John Ruiz had no credible wins to be a number 1 contender the only fighters he beat were with decent names were James Thunder and a shot Tony Tucker. Yet King tried to sell him as a credible fighter who should fight Lennox Lewis.
