Liston isn't out of the question. His skillset goes deeper than most realise. I'm not inclined to dwelve too deeply into fighters we don't have much footage of for this one.

As Dom Dumphy said, among others, a goodly number of Benny Leonard's s c r a p s were declared "no contests". I would think you would have to take that into consideration.

i forgot one thing, tyson was more complete than louis hands down, a 88 tyson did all better... except maybe just maybe accuracy.
tyson was faster, stronger, hits harder, he matched his ****nal and he had better upper, he had far better defence, much better chin, much better footwork, was as good finisher or even better, louis had maybe better jab and a little more stamina, but tyson was better overall.
by the way, schmeling was not even top 50 punchers of all time at hw... not even top 50. i can´t imagine him landing anything to hurt chins like foreman, tyson ,holyfield etc

The Perez footage I have seen - admittedly depicting an older guy past his prime - is not impressive enough. Very ponderous and at times even lethargic. But I agree with you on being fundamentally sound.

I'll admit that I'm extrapolating some of my impression based on an abbreviated performance against Dai Dower, but it gives an impression of how he looks at or near his prime. While he seems a bit methodical, he's got good timing in that fight and tracked down a mobile opponent pretty quickly.

The problem with determining what Perez's "prime" was is extremely difficult - as is the case with all decorated amateurs who turn pro at a very advanced age. The Perez that fought Dower was already over 30, and the smaller guys generally burn out very quickly - though Perez aged well, because he wasn't a guy who relied greatly on his speed and reflexes like Chang or volume activity like Harada. But I suspect that Perez's real prime was in the amateurs - though it's difficult to argue this point, because he was in the amateurs, and amateur and pro fighting are incommensurable.

What let's Liston down for me is his inability to cut off the ring.

i'm not sure about louis tbh, it all depends on the definition of a complete fighter. joe was as good as it gets at the things he did but he fought more or less one way his whole career and didn't always adapt that well in fights.

Agreed:good. But the TS wrote down the criteria and Joe fits the bill. He was excellent in several facets.

Where did Ron Lyle end up sitting in the top 50? Around 20-25?
