You guys are all wrong. The correct answer is Hagler.
    Why?

IF you look at his very long career, you can make a strong argument that HE NEVER TRULY LOST A FIGHT. Leonard got a decision....very debatable. Antuofermo made a great defense of his title, but Hagler clearly won.
Hagler's early losses and draws were seen as very dubious, and he avenged the hell out of them.

Leonard and Duran's careers were highlighted with magnificent victories, but with some embarrassing, catastrophic losses, too. Yes, they fought to an older age than Marvin, but even this I see as testament to Hagler's unwavering discipline. Marvin always made weight, came to fight in shape, and pretty much lived and breathed boxing. Duran was a party animal, and Leonard a cherry-picking part-timer. Marvin could box, punch like hell, and switch stances. He pretty much never ran out of stamina. It is hard to picture Hagler sprawled on the floor against a Camacho-type, or face first on the matt from Tommy Hearns. Marvin's chin was better than both of theirs.

    Hagler was the most well-rounded.

Leonard in my opinion but truth to be told, I dont know **** about boxing anyway. Just a thought.

But he was fast, had cool combos, fantastic footwork, beautiful head movement and defense. Didnt have the most power in the fabulous four but I think he was the most well rounded. But thats just my view. All four were such a great fighters

Hagler was flogged from pillar to post by Willie Monroe. There was nothing dubious about it, nothing whatsoever.

Experience should count, after all a fighter learns his craft as he fights.

    Duran 119 Fights
    Hagler 67 Fights

    Leonard 40 Fights.

by that criteria. Leonard was the most rounded. Duran had trouble with the top level guys who were fast, and that is not completely well rounded. And saying he was better at 135. the guys he fought there were not as good. Hagler? Problems with Leonard obviously show problems with speed and movement. Hearns hit Hagler and I think helped diminish Hagler for Leonard, who got a rusty older worn out Hagler. I think Ray is easily the best rounded. Just on the wins over Benitez,Duran,Hearns and Hagler. That proves it for me. No doubt. That level.

So this post was just another way to prop up your boy Hearns, who's not even in this thread. Your post previous to this, again questions why Hearns isn't in this fight. It really irks you that Barkley beat Hearns 2 times, and Duran, while older and further past his best than Hearns, beat Iran.

I'm not sure there's a wrong answer here but, I agree that Hagler, from my perspective at least, had the best all-round game; both in terms of skills and natural physical gifts.

I don't consider their respective lifestyles outside the ring, in forming that opinion and, whilst their records are an indication of their abilities, they can't really reflect ring capability; certainly not in the kind of detail as to answer a question such as this.

But, Hagler was an ambidextrous, heavy-handed, boxer-puncher, with as wide an armory, as any I have seen; all of which could be delivered with clinical precision, at any distance. Out-fighting, In-fighting; in the pocket countering; on the back foot or slugging it out, if called for. His movement, balance and ability to shift his weight and transfer power, combined with his switch-hitting made for some of the finest examples of 'total boxing' I am likely to ever witness.

And, I didn't even need to mention his stellar chin. ;)

    Great question by the OP.

Its a bloody hard one as well. Boxing is a funny sport in the fact that someone with one particular style can beat someone who is actually a better all round fighter. Barkley vs Hearns, Norton vs Ali and Harada vs Jofre are all classic examples.

As far as fighting at far range I give Leonard the nod out of the three. He was the fastest with both hand and feet and he had a wonderful jab. He was one of the best dancers and direction changers I have seen. On the level of guys like Pep, Pastrano, Luis Rodriguez and Cassius Clay. He was two handed but his left was better than his right.

Hagler was very good at the outside distance, especially against guys who attacked him but he lacked speed of foot and hand of Leonard. Marvin did have an incredible jab and a devastating right hook and orthodox right hand smash but his left was very average for a southpaw. Speedy movers could give Marvin grief.

Duran was also a great fighter at range but he was definitely a bit slow of foot ( especially post Montreal ) and he was no dancer. Like Hagler he was a brilliant counter puncher and ate up guys who stood in front of him but he could be outboxed.

Despite that I believe he was cleverer than Hagler and Roberto did have one of the best right hands I have seen. Both in power and versatility.

As far as infighters go both Hagler and Duran were great. Duran gets the first prize as he was unbelievable and a much better swarmer than Marvin being harder to hit on the inside. I also believe Roberto was a better puncher than Hagler on the inside.

Hagler was an absolutely great infighter once he got there though. I just believe he lacked the incoming speed of foot that Duran showed against DeJesus and in the first Leonard fight.

I would rate Leonard behind both Marvin and Roberto as an infighter but he was still very good. Ray was faster than either Duran or Hagler but he deffo telegraphed his punches on the inside and threw them with more of a wind up than Duran or Hagler. Ray loved what I call " the cowboy style shoeshine flurry " where he threw rapid punches in a left, right, left, right manner. In Montreal Duran managed to avoid a LOT of those type punches Leonard threw.

I am really struggling here but I have decided to give have Duran and Leonard equal with Marvin just a tad behind.

Lightweights and welters tend to be better all round fighters than middleweights anyway so Hagler was at a disadvantage.

    Cheers All.
