Actually, it was a blessing in disguise, otherwise he would have had to face Tyson in 1996

Dempsey was in the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest earning boxer of all time as late as the mid 1970s (including income from exhibitions and as a referee, ect...) with a total figure of over $10,000,000.00. (NOT adjusted for inflation, by the way.) I believe that record may have stood in Guinness outright until Ali finally broke it with Manila. (I'd be curious to know what Jack's lifetime earnings would translate into if indeed adjusted for inflation.) In 1925, Dempsey was the highest paid athlete in the world without even defending the championship. In terms of material gain, I'm not sure Ali ever surpassed him when factoring in commercial appeal and product endorsements.

However, during the actual course of their reigns, the most well liked or widely admired were Sullivan (who made boxing legally accepted in the States), Jeffries, Max Baer (who made it to Hollywood on the strength of his popularity), and Braddock was a hugely inspiring story.

It seems like America is no longer the place for heavyweights and the white heavyweights were rare Cooney was becoming popular and he only had 24 fights and never fought more than 8 rds. It seems like the Klitschkos have a big following in Germany, although not popular in the US I have been told so world wide the are big. Quarry had a little popularity but no one gave him a real chance vs Frazier and Ali but Jerry was a giant killer and popular in NY....when we speak of Jeffries,Sullivan, then Jack Dempsey who was a major star, then Schmeling=Germany, Sharkey, Baer and Braddock, then Marciano stood out as a Great American, then Ingo from Europe and then USA had Quarry but whites were rare in the US by then, Coetzee fought in the non-unifying era, so he had a split version and Holmes hung on to his slice and picked his spots.....Worldwide it may be the Klitschko's

He was Irish on his mothers side O'Grady and Clay's paternal grandparents were John Clay and Sallie Anne Clay; Clay's sister Eva quoted that Sallie was a native of Madagascar but there was also Irish on the Clay side back in some parts of NY where I lived the Irish called the blacks smoked Irishman and they used to joke with the black guys about it, all in fun
