    No.

It's because Wladimir Klitschko was ranked #1, and because Povetkin was ranked #2. I know it's surprising, but that isn't something that happened after the retirement of Lennox Lewis.

If a throne is vacant, the #1 and #2 contenders need to contend the title.

Confusion abounds because of the Ring's decision to acknowledge Chagaev-Klitschko as a title fight, even though Chagaev was their #3.

:good :thumbsup That has alleviated some confusion. So if Lennox Lewis comes back from retirement and beats Wlad, he would NOT become the Lineal Champion?

Why not? Wlad holds the lineal title. Anyone who beasts him takes possession of it. If Leapai beats Klitschko, he is the lineal champ.

The meeting between the #1 and #2 contender has started a new lineage. The continuation of that lineage is decided in the ring.

We did the whole tug-of-war a while back, and ultimately ended up having to agree to disagree...

I'll just never be convinced that Vitali's first two stops on the comeback trail (both over somewhat overrated victims over whom Vitali stylistically had made-in-heaven silver-platter advantages) were enough to leapfrog Chagaev with his dossier of yeoman's work and cut ahead of him in line as of that moment in history.

    Oh yeah.

Well, basically what you feel is totally fair enough.

What I'm stressing is that the Ring disagreed with you - and then went ahead and named Wlad champ anyway. SO disagreement about who was what when is possible but the facts about acceptable conditions under which lineage can be made are bare.

:think So what you're saying it, WTF was I up to in '09 and why wasn't I head editor of the Ring to set things right? :D

He would, because Wlad is already lineal champion. Whoever beats 'the man' becomes the man.

However, if Wlad retired unbeaten from hereon, and Lennox came back and then fought the #1 fighter of the division (say Pulev or whoever) right after Wlad retired then the winner would NOT be lineal champion -- unless Lennox first became the recognized #2 in the division.

That's definitely one way to look at it...

...the other way to look at it would be, who the **** cares who you had at #2 in '09

    One day IB, one day.

That is a non truth. If Lewis came back he would be the lineal champion stepping into the ring since the true link ended with him. Just like Jefries was still the man to beat when he made his comeback against Johnson.

Wlad beat a bunch of nothing men who had a high ranking by default of existing is a weak division. These guys Wlad has beaten to claim his pretend lineage aren't even hall of fame worthy.

    :yep

Let me kick you a hypothetical, purely for snickers 'n' poos...

If you subtracted Vitali's comeback from the equation, never happened, stayed retired - do you suppose Chagaev then would have, in the view of the majority & Ring Mag - defaulted (even with short periods of absence himself) to #2?

...so did Vitali, in a sense, cawk-block his brother from achieving lineal status much earlier than officially recognized?

Yeah, unquestionably he would have been the #2. Good fighter, slightly blown by the time he met Wlad though.
