“I am not an animal in my personal life. But in the ring there is an animal inside me. Sometimes it roars when the first bell rings. Sometimes it springs out later in a fight. But I can always feel it there, driving me and pushing me forward. It is what makes me win. It makes me enjoy fighting.”

“Getting hit motivates me. It makes me punish the guy more. A fighter takes a punch, hits back with three punches.”

I mostly tend to think of it as finishing someone without mercy, especially if the fighter they're going up against is already obviously out or unable to defend themselves. For example, if a guy was tied up in the ropes like Pegeus was against Mercer, some fighters would have stepped back to see if the ref called it a knockdown due to the ropes holding him up. Some fighters would have looked at the ref or even waved him in to stop the fight. Some would have kept throwing punches, but not necessarily the hardest ones they possibly could.

Mercer wound up and hit the ******* as hard as he could, sent him flying out of the ring and never batted an eye. That's plenty ruthless to me, but everyone's definition is different. :good

LaMotta didn't have the skills like Tyson. He was more ruthless in my book, because even when he was overmatched, he applied pressure and fought like an animal. When Tyson didn't meet a scared opponent, he wasn't quite the animal he was perceived to be.

what ali did to ernie terell and floyd patterson was pretty ruthless. not finishing a man just so you can punish him.

If I'm not mistaken, Dempsey has more first round knock-outs than Tyson and the viciousness of his win over Willard is still discussed to this day.
