    ok..fair enough fella.

but...if he didnt have his big punch, how far could he have got in the sport?

to a degree...whoever anyone picks here will have the "could box" label..as all pro's need to be able to box to a certain extent...and especially the ones who have become well known enough to be mentioned in a thread on a boxing forum.

Trinidad. Did a great job of beating mid- level guys while not fighting guys like Whitaker (around 96) and Quartey, Lopez, etc.. Bob, KO with the hook. Easy work. Couldn't do that **** to Oscar though :nono

Actually had really good footwork. He was very light and quick on his feet.

I think the lesson here is that no championship level fighter is a one-trick pony... except to the untrained observer.

Think I qualify as a trained observer, S...'n flat-out, Joe Frazier was a one-trick pony. Sure he bobbed 'n weaved-- predictably 'n unsuccessfully -- as he showed against George Foreman, but all he did was crank, crank, crank his left hook. His right was window dressing, like Tony DeMarco or Pipino Cuevas.

Dress-it-up any way you like, CS, but Frazier was search 'n destroy, period. Cranked his hook till whoever was in front of him crumpled; and was willing to eat whatever leather it took, in the process.

It worked great against opponents who didn't have Foreman's power.

Joe fought Ali with his face, ta get close enough ta keep wingin' his hook.

    Gallant, but one-trick-ponyish

Ali got out slugged (the KD put the nail in his coffin) by Frazier, who never took his foot off the pedal. It didn't make Ali less good; he was great -- just pulled straight back once too often 'n got clipped. What Joe brought surprised no one, least of all Ali. Joe just kept crankin' that hook, stormin' the barricades. Willing ta die 'n one hand took him a long way, BE.

Roy Jones Jr. at times looked like it, because he was so fast he didn't need more.
