All you guys no jack about boxing, Kirkland Laing was without doubt the most talented and skilfull black fighter from England, he beat a prime Reberto Duran in America on Points with one of the biggest shocks in History with a master class of boxing, he had many problems out side the ring, loved the nightlife and sometimes never trained properly as with the Colin Jones fights, but what a talent, natural talent. Duran felt he was one of the best boxers he had faced. Hands down, unbelieveable reflexes, no one could hardly lay a glove on him. They wrote a book about him.

 

Duran never mentioned Kirkland Lang once at the function I attended on Thursday evening. When asked he claimed Ken Buchanan was the toughest and most skilled opponent he ever faced. Perhaps he said that to placate the crowd, who knows. He never once mentioned Kirkland. Having said that though - the translator was appalling.

 

I will openly admit to being one of Duran's biggest marks, indeed I consider him third only to Armstrong and Robinson as the finest fighter ever.

But Duran was two and a half years (at least) past his pomp, when he lost to Laing.

And if you think Laing was without doubt the most talented English fighter, it is not me, that knows jack about boxing.

Biggest enigma, maybe; but the most talented fighters do not get flattened by Buck Smith, and they do not make the exact same mistakes in rematches (Jones)...

Conteh. One of the smoothest, most skilled technical boxer-punchers I've ever seen regardless of nationality. Among non-blacks, Howard Winstone is right up there. I'd rate him ahead of Buchanan in terms of pure skills, although Buchanan had extra reserves that would put him just above Winstone for me overall.
