Robinson was rated No.1 by the ring magazine in 1996 in a list of the best fighters in the last 50 years Ali was rated No.2 in the same list.

    Info given about Robi:

    World titles:welterweight and middleweight

    Record: 175–19–6 (110)

    Quality of competition 10

Bouts vs fighters ranked in this top 50 list: 4

Why he`s here: The last 50 years, the last 100 years doesn`t matter, He`s the greatest fighter of all-time

What he could have done to better his ranking: Walked on water.

Info on Ali by the ring:

    Record 56–5 (37)

    former heavyweight champ

    Quality of competition: 10

Bouts vs top 50 fighters: 6

Why he`s here: With apologies to Joe Louis, there`s never been a better heavyweight

What he could have done to better his ranking: Defended his title from March 1967 to October 1970.

Ali has stated that Robinson was the greatest pound for pound fighter of all time also.

I enjoyed the diagnosis of what SRR could have done better :D

Robinson was the much better and more complete boxer. Ali had a lot of flaws that couldn’t be exposed as much at Heavyweight.

    Robinson

Though in seriousness, he could have fought Burley.

What did Robinson do to be unquestionably better than Joe Gans or Benny Leonard or Harry Greb? And Ali shouldn't even be in Top 50 of all-time, there were too many fighters in lower weight divisions with wins over better opponents. His competition should be 5 or 6 out of 10 at best.

Don't agree Ali's flaws wasn't exposed as much because he fought at heavy ( because actually they were exposed, esp when he slowed down) but like R.Jones his athletic gifts were so much better than everyone, it didn't matter. And as he slowed his physical his toughness (unlike R.Jones) was so much better than everyone, it didn't matter at the time, but he definitely paid for it after he retired and later in life.

Albert Einstein, in his theory of special relativity, determined that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers, and he showed that the speed of light within a vacuum is the same no matter the speed at which an observer travels.

So...all signs point towards Sugar Ray in this one!

The young Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali looked up to SRR, and brought him to several of his fights.
SRR was better as a "boxer"...especially pre-1955 version.

Well since we are speaking relatively Ali pre 3 yrs off was impressive and dominant but he had some lapses

SRR was IMO a better boxer both absolutely and relative to his competition....I also believe his competition was tougher all around and he was still another level and list in his prime 1 fight in 131 fights losing the 1 fight to another ATG but bigger LaMotta and only 2 draws

Simple test. Take the best opponent they defeated off their record, does it still remain great after this? Nope. It turns to be good or solid, but not that great anymore.

Who do you consider the best?

I think Gans gets hurt by a lot of his opponents being obscure, and Leonard for retiring too soon. Maybe they deserve more credit, but I think Robinson had the better wins.

I used word "unquestionably" for a reason. It's all subjective, of course. I'm simply against the opinion that there could be no doubt whatsoever that SRR was the best of all time, anybody who questions that is ignorant, etc.
