Marv had a tremendous physique, but Antuofermo, Minter and Hamsho seem to have had superior physical strength. (Immediately after suffering his first defeat, Czyz specifically cited Hamsho's physical strength as the key reason for that outcome, and Bobby was no 95 pound weakling.) In Hagler's final match, SRL shoved him back at one point, and Gil Clancy commented on the potential significance of that. Among the performances of his that I watched, Marv made the most advantage of these assets against Duran. Speaking of Duran, Roberto dealt with superior size and physical strength about as well as anybody of his style ever has when facing Hagler and Barkley. For me, Dick Tiger also sets the standard when discussing who the strongest prominent middleweight might have been.
Good post. I don't think Hagler belongs in this conversation. He was actually somewhat small looking for a middleweight. He was ripped, rough and tough and pretty strong but he's not all time best in middleweight physical strength.
Eduardo Lausse. He overpowered a prime Fullmer. Thunderous puncher. Looked like a 185 pounder. Usually weighed 156. I rate Dick Tiger 2nd to Lausse.
Juan Roldan was the strongest middleweight I've seen from my era/lifetime (1970s-present) All-time? In addition to Roldan I'd say Lausse, Tiger, Fullmer, LaMotta, Shorty Hogue,Jack Dillon, Les Darcy, Bob Fitzsimmons, Carter.....lots more....
Anyone mention Gerald McClellan? He was a huge middle and walked through other middles like they were nothing.
I don't see evidence to support a claim for Greb to be fair. Everything I've read suggests he was an in and out swarmer. He doesn't look like an enforcer in the training footage either.
How do you determine who was the "strongest middleweight " ? What does strong mean? Strong puncher , Strong Taker, chin, stamina ? It is a nebulous question, and I pass, but a few oldtimers I have read about with powerful physiques were Frank Klaus and Jack Dillon. They were chiseled,as was Battling Siki, and Dick Tiger, but no one had the whiskers of a Jake LaMotta, who withstood the grenades of Bob Satterfield, and the horrendous onslaught of Ray Robinson, whilst being severely weight drained, after losing about 12 pounds just prior to the fight. Jake had a chin for all seasons...
Fighters that simply didn't get backed up or out-muscled in the trenches. Briscoe fought all forward, but Valdez showed that he was more than capable of matching him for strength when he wanted. However, guys like LaMotta and especially Tiger just didn't know how to be out-muscled. Tiger especially, given the kinds of men he took on.
Hagler was physically very strong. He was a strong puncher but I mean he could take a punch and I think his physicality was strong.
I need some help..... I saw this Australian MW,... back in 1916 I think,.... what's his name ? ----- I can't remember but he looks huge and strong at MW.... they said he was real good too.
Klaus was quite short looking at his photo's in his book "The Art Of Infighting",.... a book I highly recommend....... I can supply a link for a free download if anybody is interested.
