I'm 30 yrs. old and my dudes were without doubt Iron Mike, also Holyfield, and RJJ. Oh yeah Sugar Ray Leonard cause his vs Hagler was one of the first fights I remember watching (and was probably the only one my parents and their freinds were talking about in the build up and excited about).
Hagler was the first guy I really admired and tried to emulate. I was a clumsy ox in the ring, but it still helped to have someone like him to inspire me on to further beatings. I kind of envy the younger fans in this day and age. When I became a boxing fan in 1983, we of course had no computers, no youtube, no convenient access to much of anything historic other than the odd magazine article or book. Every once in a while, ESPN would air an old Duran lightweight title defense or Ali-Frazier II, or for a rare treat a Matthew Saad Muhammad fight. Those occasions were special. It was only a bit later when I got ahold of some tapes of Sal Sanchez fights; I'd been intrigued by what I'd read for years and already decided he was cool, but the fights themselves cemented it.
Mike Tyson and Tommy Morrison.. I still believed Tommy was a top boxer with tremendous heart who due to his bad social activities had his career cut short.. And no real need to comment on Mike,im still shattered that he didnt live up to his true potential.
As a young child i was not interested in boxing. I started to like boxing when i was 13 years old. But back then, i only knew some german fighters like Ottke, Michaelshewski and Klitschkos and i was never rooting for Ottke because he was boring and always runned away. I was verry interested in Tyson but i never saw a fight of him in germany. But some day i found some interesting pages in the internet about boxing like forum and boxrec and how to download american fights and fights of the past. Today im 20 years old and i know almost every boxer today and the greats from the past and my alltime favourite is Tyson.
