Joe Louis. Though he also liked Jack kid Berg, Randy Turpin, Tommy Farr, Nella Tarleton, Jimmy Wilde and Freddie Mills.
First one that leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Brilliant and great fighter no doubt, but the first real A-side diva.
David Haye was always my dad's favourite; Ricky Hatton and currently Tyson Fury, too. My grandfather's three favourites were always Joe Frazier, Bernard Hopkins and Saad Muhammad.
Probably Tyson.. We always ordered the PPVs in the 80s when I was a kid, even when we weren't a high income household
My dad didn’t care about boxing but my granda did. His favourite was Joe Louis and Benny Lynch. He loved Benny Lynch because he came from the Gorbals. He told me a story about Rocky Marciano. He said Marciano did a tour of Britain and ended up in a pub my granda frequented. He said Rocky was asked to sing a song. Instead, he took his jacket off, told the crowd he couldn’t sing but would be willing to fight any man in the bar… He also told me that after Benny Lynch lost his title and was a terrible alcoholic, he would let people hit him for a few shillings just to get more booze… Probably complete horse**** but his stories kept me entertained as a kid…
