'Benny' by John Burrowes is the best boxing book I've read, and I've read quite a few. The book covers the Gorbals, it's many characters and its history as well as Benny's glory and downfall. When I was an amateur boxer in the 70's and an apprentice engineer i worked with an Irish gentleman named Tommy Sharkey who'd seen Wee Benny batter Jackie Brown for the world title. He said he could hear Brown's back scrape the resin as he was being knocked down which is impossible but I still liked the tale. I've been in Scotland and been talking to men who knew him and it was obvious if you bought them a pint they'd tell you "He used to drink in that corner" Benny had probably never been near the village but as i say I liked to listen anyway.
Hamed for a South Asian and muslim in UK in them times he was majorly popular in my family which is funny as khan didn't seem to have same effect
Gypsy Joe Harris, wow! I remember getting a Sports Illustrated with him on the cover. It was one of the first issues I received from the Sports Illustrated subscription I got from my parents for my tenth birthday.
