I have that book. It’s old but it was signed by the author… Of course, the Gorbals was demolished for being an eye sore from a different era. I used to love going to the barrows as a kid. You could get great deals on old boxing books and magazines. I enjoy reading about the old timers like Lynch and the mighty atom Jimmy Wilde. Really tough men in a different age.
Reckon my dads fav fighter was Barry Michael, aussie fighter who went up and down weight classes. He eventually won an IBF junior lightweight belt. He was a big Kostya Tszyu fan also. I remember when Fenech fought Shingaki for the IBF title. It was Fenechs 7th pro fight from memory, Dad was pretty shocked how good Fenech was, from the opening bell. I remember him saying that he'd never seen an aussie fighter that good and that Fenech would become the best fighter that Australia had produced. Pretty good call really. I also remember when Bruno was beating Witherspoon. My dad said " you watch, Witherspoon will land one shot and it will be done" sure enough . I reckon he was a Joe Bugner fan too.
Ha i was a Joe Bugner fan during his first career mate but my old Da disliked him immensely, i had a few heated debates with him about Cooper v Bugner , mate I miss my old Da he loved his boxing .
Floyd Patterson. For his birthday one year I ordered a DVD of Floyd vs. Jimmy Ellis (who he also liked, just not as much) because he had told me many times he wanted to see it again to see if he still felt with fresh eyes that Floyd got robbed. (He still thought Floyd won but said it was a lot closer than he had thought at the time.)
Carlos Monzon as a kid Duran as a teen/young adult. Chapo Rosario/Chavez in the 80's Felix Trinidad in the 90's/early 00's Sergio Martinez and Manny Pacquiao recently, always jokingly called Pac "sensei" when he fought
Yeah, my Dad has been gone a while aswell. It's a long time ago now but I think my Dad thought Bugner was a bit underrated. Going the distance with Ali and Frazier was high on his list.
Well.... I come from South Africa and boxing landscape very much influenced by locals... So we had Toweel brothers back in the day which my dad followed as a youngster... Then later on definitely Gerrie Coetzee... Dad also loved Sugar Ray Leonard
My father’s favourite fighter…and my mother’s also, though she liked him for different reasons to why my dad liked him… was Muhammad Ali.
Incidentally, I think it was Aaron Pryor, but since he always called him Eric Pryor, it's safe to say that he wasn't exactly a boxing geek level of fan.
