Not rich as in who got rich during and from boxing. Rich as in those who were born and raised in rich families. The reason i am asking this is to see whether it is true that most great fighters come from lower and middle class. So who are some of these great "rich" born fighters?
Gentleman John Jackson. His farther was a wealthy furniture merchant and he fought for the love of it.
Willie DeWitt went on to law school and a career as a barrister. Henry Milligan was a Princeton or a Yale grad.
There aren't many, probably because boxing is the toughest sport around. Fighters are made on the streets not in the gym. Poverty makes you tough and able to fight to survive. 3 squares a day and an endless supply of cash makes you soft.
Although not poor in the stereotypical African sense. Nelson's old man was only a Tailor and his old dear a trader in farbics and Jewelry. Not poor, but hardly Millionaires... unless we are talking about the Zimbabwe dollar; or indeed at the moment the American dollar!
There was a decent middle weight / super middle in the 1990's named Dana Rosenblatt who grew up in an upper middle class family. Rosenblatt did not need boxing to make ends meet. After he retired, he became a top businessman.
C'mon, he was the greatest middleweight since Hagler. Head and shoulders above everyone, including Hopkins. DeWitt had it all, and more. A student of the game like yourself from "down under" should know about his skill and accomplishments.
