List boxers who had the best defense, blocking punches from sluggers. Some of the greatest fighters suffered head trauma. Avoid becoming a boxer, it doubles the chance that you will get Alzheimer's. Take care.

Howard Winstone was an exceptional judge of range and distance. Also Pat Cowdell at his peak. Pat was so thin, he would twist his torso sideways, right hand clamped to his temple, left forearm across his solar plexus. It must have been like trying to punch an eel !

Personal opinions on Ottke's career notwithstanding, he was very good defensively.

but his career choice has to be factored in.
you don't deserve a mention in a thread titled "who were some of the greatest defensive boxers/fighters" when that career choice takes fights against the best of your era out of the equation.

he never took a beating for the same reason calzaghe never took a beating.
he stayed the hell away from the US.

ottke and calzaghe, 'undefeated' fighters, also fought in the same division...while they both held a belt...and lived an hour apart by plane.
that alone tells you everything you need to know about their intent.

Over the past 30 years James Toney and Floyd Mayweather stand head and shoulders above everyone else imo
