Im sure there must be plenty of real stinkers and questionable choices but Stiverne surely has to be right up there. That was an absolute disgrace by both the WBC and Stiverne himself. I kinda felt bad for Wilder he was looking to put on a real show. So really fair play to him cuz he seemed to squeeze alot of exposure from 1 round of Boxing and 1 in ring interview along with all the other stuff thats been going on.

 

It's not just recency bias that gets Stiverne 2 a mention.

He had one disputed win over a journeyman 2 years ago where he got knocked down and looked like trash. Failed one drug test since then and missed another date. And that's it. Amir Mansour had a much better case for being mandatory.

 

Wasn't Damon Reed a mandatory for Herbie Hides WBO belt?

 

That was a voluntary as far as I remember.
Still holds the record for being dismissed the fastest in a heavyweight titlefight though. Holding a record must count for something, right?!

 

Marvin Hagler had to fight a nobody named Fully Obel TWICE, both mandatories. Both one-sided.

Go back and look at some of the WBA mandatories in the 1970s and 80s. Stiverne had actuallly held a title and had a couple of (non-recent) respectable wins on his resume. Some no-hopers who never did ANYTHING before or since have been given mandatory title shots.

Stiverne in no way should have been the mandatory, not disputing that. Shouldn’t have even been ranked given the inactivity. But there have been far worse. Heck, the Klitschkos fought a few.

I used to like watching Hide and it's a shame cruiserweight had no money back then.

 

Leapai was pretty bad... But even Leapai would destroy this shot and fat version of Stiverne.

 

Fres Oquendo fiasco deserves a mention.
