Ehhh, Tyson ran 6 miles max I believe. Hard training but compared to Marciano, Maher, JMM?

And how long was he disicplined exactly? Even by Tubb's and before he was a partier.

Also, Archie Moore says he'd chew on steak but wouldn't swallow any of it. Other fighters have done that too. It's funny, chewing preps your stomach for digestion, gets your body burning calories because it believes food is on it's way in. But you're lying to it, as you're not going to eat anything.

I honestly think Peter Maher wins here, always have. The mans regine was Marciano level plus in intensity.

Shame his chin was such **** and he become a drunk later in his career.

Six miles a day is more than enough for a 5' 9-11" fighter trying to get into his 215-220lbs prime shape.

That is a mighty big unit pounding the road, and doing much more is going to bring injuries (such as shin splints) into the equation.

I know it's more then enough, I'm just saying fighters like Marciano and Maher ran 3 times as much as that, and that's exactly what this thread is asking.

Marciano was nearer the 185lbs bracket, and if I was Maher, rather than all that running, perhaps if I could not put muscles on my chin, extensive neck and core exercises, could not do any harm?

No mentions of Basilio? Dundee claimed he trained harder than Marciano. Was always in the gym and didn't worked his ass off.

With all respect, is that for real? Did Marciano run 18 miles everyday? I just cant believe that, its insane, not saying you are liying or something but where did you get that info?

A week or so within fights he would sometimes run 12-15+ miles.

    18 is a lot but I wouldn't doubt it.

Interesting feat but Taramuara indians from Mexico can run 100 miles in one day....Ponce De Leon is from that tribe/

Running is only one component the most important is diet year round I think that is why Hopkins is doing well his weight is stable year round.

i like to throw calzaghe in here... he never came into a fight out of shape and his spartan like training since he was 9year old waking up at 4-5am BEFORE school do a couple of miles running is dedication. He keeping that up until he was 36yr old is some training. especially the hills and snow/rain he had to run through. Anyone who knows where Joe did his trainin will know it was proper OLD school running in forests/up huge hills etc etc. He trainined unbelievably hard Enzo mac, commented how intensive the training joe did, was a eye opener for all in the gym

Never done roadwork? A 3-6mile run can be much harder than a 10-12mile run (which I can guarantee no boxer does on the regular anyway). And an intense 3mile run actually is the best distance to maximise VO2 (ie max stamina). The other bulk of his training was very impressive if you look at it, both physical and technical sides. People also act like speed is just genetic and you don't have to train and practice hard to develop that speed in the first place

JMM isn't even disciplined enough to keep his right hand up during a fight :yep

My point was in his prime he was very disciplined, he became less disciplined and hence faded into Bolivia

    1. No they didnt run 18miles, if they said they did they're lying and certainly not within a week of the fight as someone on the fight speculated because they'd be dead in the ring

    2. Running 18miles is no benefit for a boxer, it doesnt increase stamina as much as an intense 3mile run, it increases muscle endurance but optimal lung/heart peak performance is maximised over a 3mile distance. The speed they will be operating at is no use to a boxer what so ever, their athleticism will not improve because they will be moving far far too slow. Their high twitch muscle fibres will be neglected and they'll just be slow.

    3. Running as far as 18miles runs the body down for a long period not really allowing other training. Running that far also causes knee/shin/foot injuries amongst others

BTW not even 140lb marathon runners run 18miles a day, yet Marciano does, BS
